Geography of Niger
A sub- Saharan country, Niger geography is marked by deserts, sand dunes, uplands, hills etc. With the Sahel and the Sahara Deserts as the most dominant feature of Niger Geography , flat and level lands mostly cover the face of this land-locked region. With a total area of about 1,267,000 square kilometers, Niger is the world's 22nd largest country. The most important feature of Niger geography is that this West African country is bordered by seven countries - Nigeria, Chad, Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin and Libya.
Niger geography comprises of sand dunes, some uplands, flatlands and rolling Savannah. The lowest point of Niger geography is the Niger River from which the place has derived its name. Monts Bagzane is the highest point in Niger and it is 6,634 ft in height. The general climate of Niger is sub-tropical in nature but towards the south it tends to be more tropical. The hot and dry weather of the country often causes droughts. The rainy period is very short and the only permanent source of water is the Niger River. The average temperature all through out the year ranges between 30°C to 50°C. The months of December, January and February are colder.
Niger geography and climate is responsible for low vegetation in Niger. Scanty rainfall has led to very little flora in the country. Herbaceous vegetation is found in the Savannah region which includes various species of kapok, baobab, bastard mahogany, shea tree and so on. Niger Geography has resulted in the region becoming home to a number of rare species of animals. The faunas found in Niger includes, hyena, waterbuck, leopard, lion, antelope, wart hog, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, horned vipers, lizards, pythons and manatee. To know more about
