How do you overcome nihilism? self.philosophy EddieVanHelsing Sixteen years ago, I found myself at a crossroads. My old ideals, Christianity and the sort of modern liberalism most conducive to European social democracy, no longer meant anything to me. For a while, I didn't believe in anything or think anything was worth believing in. Long story short, I became a nihilist. Nietzsche wrote at length about the need to overcome nihilism, and about how the Ubermensch is one who rejects his old and worthless ideals, but also rejects nihilism and finds new ideals that he can use to make his life meaningful. Out of curiosity, I ask you this: if you reached a point where your old beliefs were worthless to you, what new belief or ideal did you embrace as an alternative to nihilism? I chose egoism; I decided that the purpose of my life was to live it as

Nihilism
- Nothing You are here: Philosophy Nihilism Nihilism – Abandoning Values and Knowledge
Nihilism derives its name from the Latin root nihil, meaning nothing, that which does not exist. This same root is found in the verb “annihilate” to bring to nothing, to destroy completely. Nihilism is the belief which:
  • labels all values as worthless, therefore, nothing can be known or communicated. associates itself with extreme pessimism and a radical skepticism, having no loyalties.
The German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), is most often associated with nihilism. In Will to Power [notes 1883-1888], he writes, “Every belief, every considering something true, is necessarily false because there is simply no true world.” For Nietzsche, there is no objective order or structure in the world except what we give it. The objective of nihilism manifests itself in several perspectives:
  • Epistemological nihilism denies the possibility of knowledge and truth, and is linked to extreme skepticism. Political nihilism advocates the prior destruction of all existing political, social, and religious orders as a prerequisite for any future improvement.

NIHILISM, LIFE AFTER DEATH, AND MODERN PHILOSOPHY
What Nihilism and Nihilist philosophies – including Rationalism, Humanism, Agnosticism, Existentialism, and other ideas from Modern Philosophy Really Say About Your Future
Do you believe that life does end, or may end, at death? Everyone who believes that death may be the end should read the following essay from cover to cover. It represents a serious attempt to identify what may be a critical flaw in the foundation of many modern philosophies. It will help those who study Nihilism, Rationalism, Humanism, Agnosticism, and Existentialism, recognize questions that are probably already on their minds. It will address essential questions that you need to seek answers for. We will suggest that, whether they realize and admit it or not, anyone who does not believe in a life after death, an afterlife, be they Rationalists, Humanists, Agnostics, or otherwise, is necessarily a Nihilist. What is nihilism? T he Webster's Dictionary definitions of nihilism that we will be using are that nihilism is a doctrine that - "beliefs are unfounded and that existence is senseless and useless”, and a doctrine “that denies any objective ground of truth and especially of moral truths” ((c) 1997 by Merriam-Webster, Incorporated). We will be discussing the idea that true nihilists "believe in nothing". In doing so we will be questioning the very foundation of the works of modern philosophers who argue that one may find or create "value" in a world without a life after death, a nihilistic world.

Ethical Nihilism denies moral principles and ethical values. Human beings are not seen as responsible for what they do, therefore, each individual makes up the difference between good and evil. Since the nihilist denies possessing free will, the ethical nihilist can neither be praised nor blamed for his good or evil behavior. In short, reasoning cannot be trusted to determine the truth of right or wrong.
Ethical Nihilism chooses to ignore that moral principles, are inescapable. Yet even the most basic ideas about good and evil are present in every society.
C.S. Lewis remarked, “cultures may disagree about whether a man may have one wife or four, but all of them know about marriage; they may disagree about which actions are most courageous, but none of them rank cowardice as a virtue.”
Ethical Nihilism prefers to deny intrinsic principles and values which are imprinted upon every heart and mind ( Romans 2:14-15
