Identification. Location and Geography. Formed by volcanic upheavals, the island sits atop 100-foot (30-meter) cliffs rising straight out of deep ocean. All fourteen villages are situated on a narrow terrace that encircles the island. The interior consists of a central saucer-shaped plateau, one hundred fifty feet (forty-five meters) higher than the terrace, covered in ferns, scrub, and second-growth trees. In the southeast quadrant, the remaining primary forest has been set aside as a conservation area protected by legislation and supernatural strictures. There is no surface water except in a few caves with small, brackish pools. Rainwater is collected in tanks as run off from roofs. Despite fluctuation in annual rainfall, the tropical climate is conducive to agricultural production, although cultivation is difficult because of the terrain: a thin layer of fertile soil surrounding jagged limestone pinnacles. East-southeast trade winds give way during the wet season (November to March) to variable winds and occasional storms. Hurricanes have been massive forces of social change, occurring on average once every seven years and causing considerable damage to both buildings and agriculture.

    Culture of Niue
Niueans take pride in their many traditions and cultures that have been handed down from generation to generation as a living entity. Many are still being observed today such as our koloama season where seasonal sardine-like fish visit Niue ’s shores. When koloamas run, certain places are closed to public swimming, but there are still numerous other swimming pools and coves that can be used during that short period. Sunday is a quiet day in Niue . Most people attend church in the morning and again in the afternoon. Throughout the country, Sunday is considered to be a day of rest and worship and visitors are asked to be considerate of the local Sunday observances. Many people play golf, go sightseeing and swimming on Sunday, but certain activities such as boating and fishing are not allowed. Anyone not sure of Sunday protocols are welcome to check at the Niue Information Office in Alofi for guidance. Tipping is not encouraged.
    People
Niue’s less than 1500 residents enjoy dual citizenship, as an independent nation in free association with New New Zealand . They are bilingual, speaking both Niuean and English, and enjoy an independent lifestyle. The locals are very receptive to visitors and have accepted tourism as an important component of their economic wellbeing. They are well educated, generally enjoy life and travel quite often.

CULTURE Niueans take pride in their many cultural traditions have been handed down from generation to generation. Women weavers are highly respected for the original design and quality of their craft and a fine array of hats, mats, and baskets made from local materials are readily available. Niue's unique traditions and festivals include haircutting (for boys) and ear piercing ceremonies (for girls). These gatherings are usually held on a Saturday in private homes. Families welcome visitors to these occasions when permission is asked beforehand. It is an opportunity to see and witness a local tradition and share in that experience with the host family. Sunday is a day of rest and worship and visitors are asked to be considerate of the Sunday observations. Fishing and boating are not undertaken, but many play golf or go sight seeing. Anyone not sure of Sunday protocols are welcome to check at the Niue Information Office in Alofi for guidance.

Fakaalofa lahi atu, NIUE CULTURE AND ARTS FESTIVAL 23 – 30 APRIL 2011 I am pleased to announce that the 2nd Niue Culture and Arts Festival will be held in Niue from 23 – 30 April 2011. The festival is aimed at reconnecting Niueans abroad with the home of their ancestors and to showcase the uniqueness of Niuean culture and heritage, from Niue traditional and contemporary music, dance, poetry, drama, food, traditional sports, and more. The festival will also be an opportunity to contribute to Niue’s tourism and economic development activities. In April 2009, the first ever Niue Culture and Arts festival was held in Niue. The festival was a huge success with an attendance of approximately 150 Niueans from Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Australia. This year I wish to invite you and your organisation to share your talents and participate in what promises to be a magnificent event. This is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with our homeland and share the unique sounds, sights and flavours of Niue. We hope you can join us in this celebration of our culture, our heritage our people and our home.
