The culture of Niue
Like all Polynesian people, Niueans love to celebrate. A major event for teenage boys is their "hair cutting ceremony". Many boys keep a long tail of hair since childhood and this is ritually removed at a gathering held at the boy's home, usually on a Saturday. Guests invited to the feast contribute considerable amounts of food and money to a fund that goes to the boy after expenses are paid. The pastor and close family members cut locks of hair that have been tied with ribbons. and everyone sits down at the following feast. Polynesian culture is still alive and well as displayed at the Festival of Pacific Arts. Taoga Niue is a government project which promotes Niuean culture and heritage. The Niuean language is a western Polynesian language closely related to Tongan, with slight pronunciation differences between the Motu and Tafiti moieties and different spelling conventions. Most Niueans are bilingual: Niuean tends to be the language of family and village life, and English the language of business. Considerable switching between languages occurs in almost every setting.

Fishing is difficult and catches are poor, due to the limited reef around the island. Chickens were raised in the past, but they have been replaced by wild rats and fish as the main sources of protein. There is a tendency toward a reliance on fishing on the coast and taro farming farther inland. The Niueans were politically subordinate to the Tongans, whose leader evidently had a hand in the selection of their paramount chief. The concepts of mana and tapu were primary among aboriginal religious beliefs. Nearly all Niueans are now Christian. The Niueans had many gods, organized into a Hierarchical pantheon.

Niuean Kiwis journey home to share culture
Newswire Team Front Page Layout Latest News News By Brenda Cottingham NIUEAN New Zealanders on a cultural exchange to their home island had an unexpected windfall when their art work was bought by the locals for thousands of dollars.   Artists from the group painted works in acrylic of scenes around the island.     Wellington’s Niue Ki Mua group was part of the one-week art and cultural festival last month when 100 Niuean Kiwis visited to share their talent and cultural knowledge. The young people from Wellington helped Taumafai Nokupega, a vaka (canoe) builder, carry two partly dug-out canoes from the bush.  Andrew Mokalei helped carry the vaka and said it was hard work because of the rocks and dense bush.   Taumafai held workshops to show the New Zealand-born how the Niue vaka was made.  Niue Premier Toke Talagi said Taumafai had lost five canoes to the huge waves during the tsunami in January 2004. Dianna Fuemana, an Auckland playwright, presented her play

    edit History of Music
The Niue culture and tradition is also rich in music. However, most of the very traditional Niuean songs are sung without the use of any musical instruments. The only instrument that is used for the very traditional dances is a wooden drum known in Niuean as palau or nafa , made out of a carved trunk of the selie tree. The use of the instrument is mainly to provide a beat for the dances.
    edit Tame
The main dance for celebrating the opening of a new building, facility, wedding, or birthday is the tame . The tame involves singing with guitars, ukuleles and sometimes using a musical keyboard. It accompanies a dance that has different actions to go with the meaning of the song. Both men and women dance together in a tame . Most of the time the women will dance while sitting down while the men dance while standing. However, this has nothing to do with status, as Niue women and men have equal status in the Niue society.
    edit Today
As Niue modernized, its music began to be influenced by other cultures.
