Aegir - Aegir is the god of the sea. He is both worshipped and feared by sailors, for they believed that Aegir would occasionally appear on the surface to take ships, men and cargo alike, with him to his hall at the bottom of the ocean. Sacrifices were made to appease him. His wife is the sea goddess Ran with whom he has nine daughters (the billows), who wore white robes and veils. His two faithful servants are Eldir and Fimafeng. The latter was killed by the treacherous god Loki during a banquet the gods held at Aegir's undersea hall near the island of Hler . Aegir was known for the lavish entertainment he gave to the other gods. Aesir - The Aesir are the warrior gods who live in Asgard, one of the nine worlds. They were formerly opposed by the Vanir, an elder race of gods, but the Vanir were eventually assimilated are often considered to be Aesir. Alaisiagae - The goddess of war. Alberich - A dwarven king, Alberich lives in a subterranean palace carved out of rock and ornated with gems and precious metal. He guards the Nibelung hoard and is also a very powerful magician. He gave Siegfried the sword Balmung and a cloak which granted invisibility. Freya received the necklace Brisingamen along with Draupnir, Odin’s ring, and the magical sword Tyrfing from him also Alfheim - Alfheim is one of the nine worlds. It is located on the highest level of the Norse universe. Also found on this level are the worlds of Asgard and Vanaheim. Alfheim is the palace of the god Freyr and the homeland of the elves of light. Neither the elves of light nor the elves of darkness, who live in Svartalfheim, participate in any of the events described in the Norse myths. Elves do, however, have active roles in the literature of quite a few of the other branches of Indo-European mythology.

    Introduction
The red-blooded, rip-roaring, gung-ho Gods beloved by the Vikings. We could have listed them as Nordic, but 'Norse' sounds like the snorting of a giant battle stallion so we went for that. Their idea of Heaven was VALHALLA. Warriors only. You had to die in battle first and be escorted by beautiful blonde VALKYRIES. Here you could clash in battle all day long, your cleft limbs and cleavagings miraculously restored at the close of play. Then you spent all night carousing, feasting, getting roaring drunk and discussing the day's fun. "Bjorn, when you took my head off with that double-headed axe - just brilliant. I didn't see it coming at all. My blood hit the ceiling! Just wait till tomorrow though. I've got a great revenge planned." "I'll drink to that! Here, barmaid, five hundred drinking horns of Kvas please. And a packet of pork scratchings." So welcome to the Norse pantheon, which is not just Norway but the rest of Scandinavia - which includes Denmark and Sweden. The Vikings who were Swedes travelled mostly eastwards, and the Danes and Norwegians travelled mostly westwards. (The Swedes also ventured into Finland, which was not too impressed and mostly preferred its own Gods.) And Iceland came into the equation and did its own Viking things from 800 A.D.

Myths and Legends of the World
Norse Mythology Norse mythology comes from the northernmost part of Europe, Scandinavia: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. The mythology of this region is grim, shadowed by long, sunless winters. But the darkness is laced with gleams of grandeur and sparks of humor. The myths depict a universe in which gods and giants battle among themselves in a cosmic conflict fated to end in the destruction of the world. Background and Sources Norse mythology developed from the myths and legends of northern peoples who spoke Germanic languages. It shares many features with the mythology of pre-Christian Germanic groups. When some of these groups spread into England and Scandinavia, they carried their myths with them. As they converted to Christianity, their traditional beliefs faded. But Christianity did not take hold in Scandinavia until a later date, and the Norse version of Germanic mythology remained vigorous through the Viking era, from about A . D . 750 to 1050. Modern knowledge of Norse mythology stems from medieval texts, most of them written in Iceland. Descendants of Norse colonists in that country maintained a strong interest in their heritage even after becoming Christian.

June 19, 2001
In the weeks leading up to this year's E3 trade show, it was widely anticipated that Norwegian-based developer and publisher Funcom would make a prominent showing. With Anarchy Online nearing release, the event would be that title's last opportunity to achieve broad exposure to both retail buyers and the game media before going commercial. The team took full advantage, making a very favorable impression by surprising attendees with the introduction of new, much more dramatic graphics along with a number of new gameplay elements such as newbie starting areas and vehicles. Shortly afterwards, the beta test was updated with these changes. In addition, many thousands of new testers were added, and with only a week to go before Anarchy Online goes commercial, interest has surged.
At the end of our E3 demo, we received another very pleasant surprise when we learned that Funcom is looking well ahead and already working on its second persistent online world project. Entitled Midgard, it will be based on Norse history and mythology, themes that are obviously very close to the developers. Indicative of the variations in design that are sure to mark the online genre's future, it will also be a game with strong strategy and in-game community-building elements for those who wish to do more than just bash monsters. E3 appointments tend to be an hour or less, so there wasn't nearly enough time for the many questions we wanted to ask. To this end, we followed up with Funcom and received the chance for this lengthy and informative Midgard Interview with the man heading up the team, Game Director Ragnar Tørnquist.

Although we know a little from observations made by Tacitus and Caesar, most of what we know of Norse mythology comes from Christian times, beginning with the Prose Edda of Snorri Sturluson (c.1179-1241). Not only does this mean the myths and legends were written after the period when they were believed, but Snorri, as is to be expected, occasionally intrudes his non-pagan, Christian world view.
    Types of Gods
The Norse gods are divided into two major groups, the Aesir and Vanir, in addition to the giants who came first. Some believe the Vanir gods represent an older pantheon of the indigenous people whom the invading Indo-Europeans encountered. In the end, the Aesir, the newcomers, overcame and assimilated the Vanir. Georges Dumezil (1898-1986) thought the pantheon reflected the typical pattern of Indo-European gods where different divine factions hold different societal functions:
