  • Fotolia.com Alternative schools can help with behavioral and academic issues. Many school districts in the United States feature alternative schools, which are usually established to give students having a hard time in regular classrooms a different environment in which to learn. Some schools allow students to graduate with a degree, and some serve as temporary programs until the students can return to their original schools. North Carolina's alternative schools offer an array of services including counseling, behavior modification programs, evening classes and programs for students with learning disabilities.
  • Sellars-Gunn Education Center
  • Sellars-Gunn Education Center in Burlington features several alternative programs, including vocational and technical education, an evening program, and a learning center for both middle school and high school students, which offers individualized instruction. Boarding Middle School in North Carolina
About Programs Contact Arthur Morgan School: The Arthur Morgan School (AMS), located in Burnsville, North Carolina, is a private, alternative, day and boarding school for middle school students in grades 7, 8 and 9. AMS provides a safe and loving environment where our students learn to question and evaluate, think creatively and work cooperatively. A low student/teacher ratio ensures individualized instruction and guidance. Students and staff honor the Quaker values of simplicity, responsibility, service, personal integrity, nonviolent conflict resolution and respect for self, others and the environment. With an emphasis on our work program, students learn the importance of community service, volunteerism, environmental stewardship and sustainability. And as a staff run school with no headmaster, students are included in consensus decision making processes where peace making skills are gained and community is fostered.
