North Carolina State University Extension Forestry
Accessibility Navigation:
We believe in sharing our knowledge with the people of North Carolina and in supporting the economic prosperity of NC communities through the wise use of its forest and natural resources. North Carolina is a state rich in forest resources with almost 60 percent, or 18.3 million acres , of the state covered in forests. The wise use of this resource is important for water and air quality, wildlife habitat, beautiful views, timber resources, and economic prosperity. Our extension and outreach programs work hard to make sure that the general public, landowners, community leaders, industry professionals and others all have an opportunity to learn of new discoveries and techniques affecting their lives in a timely manner. We do this by providing educational programs and professional services that reach people in a variety of different ways. Our programs cover the spectrum, ranging from Christmas tree production to youth education. Learn about the program areas, educational opportunities, and publications we offer by exploring the links below.

NC Community College System Approves Afterschool Certificate This fall, the NC Community College System State Board approved the offering of a statewide afterschool certificate, along with new afterschool-specific coursework. The offerings are the product of two years of work with the Community College System, including focus groups, an online forum with school-age faculty, and extensive surveys of the afterschool field by the NC Afterschool Professional Development Work Group. Following this approval, the 58 community college campuses will have the opportunity to offer the new “School-Age Care” certificate, which feeds into a 2-year School-Age degree.

About Program Description Mentor Orientation ... Get Involved The Math Mentoring Program was created to inspire and encourage all students, especially young women, to continue their study of mathematics, and to learn about careers in which mathematics plays a role. The program links local female professionals from mathematics-related fields with a group of 2 to 3 8th grade girls. Our main objective is to encourage girls who have an interest in mathematics to "stay on the math path". The reason we focus on 8th grade is because that is right before the girls get into high school and we want to encourage them to take the harder and more challenging math classes. Through the monthly interactions during the second semester of the school year, the girls learn about their mentor's job, career, and lifestyle. In past news: WAM in the Daily Tar Heel Paper!
