Current Spotlight: Korean Buddhism
Buddhism has a long history, originating in India over 2,600 years ago. Travelers introduced the religion to Korea around the fourth century A.D. Since that time, Buddhism has greatly influenced Korean society, culture, and the arts. Although Buddhism's influence over society has declined in recent years, the devout still make regular pilgrimages to give offerings at temples. Korean Buddhism Past Spotlights Korean War Korea gained independence from Japan in August 1945 at the end of WWII. Ideologically split by the U.S. and the Societ Union into South and North, both sides dreamed of eventual reunification. North Korea shares its southern border, obviously, with South Korea, and nuzzles up against China in the north and Russia in the far northeast. The country is slightly smaller in area than England, and just a few thousand square kilometres larger than its southern cousin. It faces Japan to the south and looks east across the Sea of Japan (known as the East Sea in Korea). North Korea is estimated to be 80 per cent uninhabitable mountains, compared to a mere 70 per cent uninhabitable land in the south. When the Japanese were running the place they were no keen environmentalists, and used the whole peninsula as their own private timber mill and mine, especially once WWII kicked on. But much of North Korea's sheer inaccessibility saved it, and the northern and eastern regions of the country are mostly rugged mountains with dense forests, not well suited to agriculture or easy to exploitation. The Korean War and allied bombing in the 1950s took a huge toll, but much of the country is still shrouded in dense forests, with vast mineral wealth lying untapped below the surface. Estuaries and marshes teem with migratory birds and other wildlife, and if you manage to get out in the back blocks you may manage to see black bear or deer. The weather is similar to South Korea's, only colder and drier in winter. Most of the rain falls from July to September, but autumn is drier with crisp, bright days and cool nights. The winters are long, frigid and noticeably lacking in ski resorts, making travel questionable at best. Summers are generally hot and sticky with lots of rain.

Since Korea came from a cultural background of a very well defined social strata, slavery was a way of life and owning slaves was an acceptable custom in the upper classes. This practice was abolished in 1894. In 1946, a land reform brought about considerable changes in the social setup. The reform took away excess land from the elite and distributed them among the peasants. Other reforms during the same period ensured that education was made available to a majority of the population. This led to a rise in previously uneducated peasants finding employment in state offices or in the army. After the establishment of North Korea as a nation, an education system modeled largely on that of the Soviet Union was established. The system faces serious obstacles. According to North Korean sources, at the time of North Korea's establishment, two-thirds of school-age children did not attend primary school, and most adults, numbering 2.3 million, were illiterate. In 1950, primary education became compulsory.

Culture
Traditional aspects of Korean culture tend to be downplayed or ignored in North Korea. The state is officially atheist and shuns traditional religious ceremonies and practices, though some state-sanctioned churches exist. There is a vast personality cult built up around Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-il, and much of North Korea's literature, theater, and film deal with praising or glamorizing various exploits of the two men and their life stories. What are the latest developments regarding the North Korean nuclear threat? The North Korean situation remains as unpredictable as ever. In March 2010 a South Korean ship was sunk apparently by a torpedo resulting in the loss of 45 lives. South Korea blamed North Korea for the incident and tensions between the two countries are presently very tense. In June 2009, the Associated Press reported that in response to new U.N. sanctions, North Korea declared it would progress with its uranium enrichment program. This marked the first time the DPRK has publicly acknowledged that it is conducting a uranium enrichment program. In August 2009, former US president Bill Clinton met with Kim Jong-il to secure the release of 2 US journalists, who had been sentenced for entering the country illegally. In June 2008, North Korea destroyed one its nuclear reactors and the U.S. agreed to begin an aid program and to drop North Korea from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. These developments followed a 2007 announcement by North Korea that it would disable its nuclear program. These developments are the result of an ongoing process of reaching a diplomatic solution to the controversy which accompanied North Korea's prior declarations of intent to resume its nuclear program and withdraw from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. If history is a reliable indicator, North Korea may again threaten to resume its nuclear program unless it becomes more comfortable with its relationship with the United States and other nations.
