    Saipan
Saipan key , volcanic island (2000 pop. 62,392), 47 sq mi (122 sq km), W Pacific, capital of the Northern Mariana Islands . It is mountainous; the highest peak is Mt. Tagpochau (1,526 ft/465 m). Clothing is the main export, but sugarcane, coffee, citrus fruits, and coconuts are grown, and the island has phosphate and manganese deposits. The main campus of Northern Marianas College is on the island. Saipan, with the other Marianas, was mandated to Japan in 1920 by the League of Nations. In World War II the island (site of a Japanese airbase) was taken by U.S. forces in 1944 and became a base for air attacks on the Japanese mainland. From 1953 to 1962 Saipan was used to train Nationalist Chinese guerrillas for infiltration of the Chinese mainland. The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia,

Did the Bush Administration Promote Sex Trafficking in the Northern Mariana Islands?
Tuesday October 17, 2006 zSB(3,3) Category: International Human Rights
President Bush signs the largely symbolic End Demand for Sex Trafficking Act of 2005. Image courtesy of the U.S. House of Representatives. I'm not really in the habit of reading John Aravosis' AMERICAblog , but there are times when he brings attention to things that we should be outraged about, but aren't. Here's a good example: In at least one instance, the Bush administration actually fired an official due to his opposition to sex slavery in the Northern Mariana Islands simply because the government of the Islands, a U.S. protectorate, was represented at the time by then-powerful, now-disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff . I can't put it any better than Aravosis didand this is a case where his sledgehammer rhetoric is entirely justified: Remember how just two years ago George Bush claimed he wanted to put a stop to human trafficking - i.e., women being forced into sexual slavery?
