The Northwest Territories lies in the north-central region of Canada. Northwest Territories, an administrative division of Canada consisting of the part of the mainland north of 60° north latitude between the Yukon Territory and Nunavut and including several islands in Hudson Bay. The total area of the Northwest Territories is 553,418 square miles (1,433,346 km2). Few areas on earth are so remote and hostile to human settlement. Most of the region is tundra underlain by permafrost, a subsurface zone that never thaws. The Mackenzie River valley occupies the western part of the mainland and is virtually the only area of white settlement. It is a fairly level region, scantily forested and dotted by many lakes. The valley is bordered by the 9,000-foot (2,700-m) Mackenzie Mountains and two of Canada's largest lakes, Great Bear and Great Slave lakes. The rest of the mainland is a treeless, glacier-scoured land that varies from flat to rolling. Countless rivers and lakes, poor drainage, rocky expanses, and widespread glacial deposits characterize this area. The climate of the Northwest Territories is harsh and severe. Winters are long, bitterly cold, and marked by lengthy periods of darkness. Summers are short, generally cool to warm, and accompanied by long daylight hours. Conditions are least severe in the Mackenzie Valley, where average temperatures vary from about -10° to -25° F. (-23° to -32° C.) in January and reach 60° F. (16° C.) in July. Average temperatures elsewhere are considerably lower. Precipitation is light, usually about 10 inches (250 mm) a year. Much of it falls as snow.

Nahanni National Park Reserve in the Northwest Territories of Canada, approximately 600 km west of Yellowknife , protects a portion of the Mackenzie Mountains Natural Region. The centrepiece of the park is the South Nahanni River . Four great canyons line this spectacular whitewater river. At Virginia Falls , the river plunges 90 metres in a thunderous plume. It is more than twice the height of Niagara Falls . In the center of the falls is a dramatic spire of resistant rock, called Mason's Rock after Bill Mason , the famous Canadian canoeist, author, and filmmaker. There is a proposal to rename the falls after former Canadian Premier Pierre Trudeau The park's sulphur hotsprings, alpine tundra, mountain ranges, and forests of spruce and aspen are home to many species of birds, fish and mammals. A visitor centre in Fort Simpson features displays on the history, culture and geography of the area. The park was designated as the first

Great Bear Lake lies between two major physiographic regions: the Kazan Uplands portion of the Canadian Shield and the Interior Plains . Originally it was part of preglacial valleys that were reshaped by erosional effects of ice during the Pleistocene . Since then, the lake has undergone different changes resulting from rebound following the melting of the ice.

The Arctic Circle is one of the five major circles of latitude that mark maps of the Earth . This is the parallel of latitude that runs north of the Equator . Everything north of this circle is known as the Arctic, and the zone just to the south of this circle is the Northern Temperate Zone The Arctic Circle marks the southern extremity of the polar day of the summer solstice in June and the polar night of the winter solstice in December. Within the Arctic Circle, the arctic Sun is above the horizon for at least 24 continuous hours per year , in conjunction with the Arctic's Summer Solstice , which is often referred to in local vernacular as midnight sun . Likewise, in conjunction with the Arctic's Winter Solstice , the Arctic sun will be below the horizon for at least 24 continuous hours. Due to precession , the Arctic Circle fluctuates within a band of 250 kilometres, moving by about half a kilometre in one year.
