Our Norwegian Heritage Norway: History The forefathers of modern Norwegians were prehistoric hunters and farmers that arrived after the last Ice Age and other groups that continued to arrive through the Roman period and on through the 6th Century AD. The settlements in Southern and Western Norway reached saturation point prior to the Viking Era and it is from these areas that the Vikings sailed. Viking Era (793 - 1066): Although many Norwegians glorify these seaworthy marauders, their victims had other opinions. It should be noted that the Vikings did not just destroy lives and property while stealing valuables and people for slaves, they also created colonies in Ireland, Scotland, and Iceland and extensively explored the northern Atlantic Ocean. This era is said to have begun in 793 and ended in 1066 with the defeat of King Harald Hardruler in 1066. In the southeast and north Norway, on the other hand, settlement based on agriculture and other activities spread to previously uninhabited areas, particularly in the mountains and valleys. Unification Era (1020 - 1350): At the beginning of this era, Norway was not unified, but by 1060 the country was unified by force with Christianity forcibly introduced and finally in1030, becoming the "state religion" with the death of martyred King Olaf. The 12th and the 13th centuries were a time of growth and prosperity during which Oslo became Norway's capital. During this time

Last updated : Nov 2009 Norway History The origin of the first inhabitants of Norway is uncertain, but it is likely that they travelled north from central Europe.
The known history of the country begins during the 9th century AD and is based on the Viking sagas, supported by archaeological evidence, and the explorations of Viking adventurers who colonised the Scottish islands, parts of the Scottish and Irish mainland's, Iceland and (for a short time) Greenland. Norway itself was divided into a number of fiefdoms.

Norway : History
Norway was a nonbelligerent during World War I, but as a result of the German invasion and occupation during World War II, Norwegians generally became skeptical of the concept of neutrality and turned instead to collective security. During the German occupation 736 Norwegian Jews perished; Norwegians saved more than 900 Jews by hiding them and smuggling them across the border into Sweden. Norway was one of the signers of the North Atlantic Treaty in 1949 and was a founding member of the United Nations. The first UN General Secretary, Trygve Lie, was a Norwegian. Under the terms of the will of Alfred Nobel, the Storting (parliament) elects the five members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee who award the Nobel Peace Prize to champions of peace. Norway voted on entry to the European Union (EU) in 1974 and 1994, rejecting membership both times. Today a majority remains opposed to EU membership. Sources:

Norway : History
The Viking time -9th to 11th centuries was one of national unification and development. The Norwegian royal line died out in 1387, and the nation entered a time of union with Denmark. By 1586, Norway had become part of the Danish Kingdom. In 1814, as a result of the Napoleonic wars, Norway was separated from Denmark and combined with Sweden. The union persisted until 1905, when Sweden recognized Norwegian freedom. Akershus Aust Agder Buskervd Finnmark ... AskBabyNames @ 2008 MapZones

Norway History
Norway was not an organized country as compared to Sweden. The rulers namely kings and chiefs were not able to carry forward an authoritarian rule even till the 9th century. The Viking s originally began with invasions and soon accumulated enough gold and wealth that was sufficient for taking control over the other districts. Harold Haarfager, a bard was powerful enough to rule over the city and the adjoining territories in the year 872. The ones who did not agree to his terms had to leave the country without any of their belongings. Soon the authority passed from him to his sons who divided the region and embraced a new religion called Christianity. His son Olaf Trygvesson fought with the Swedes to protect this region but ultimately has to back off with some parts which fell under the rule of Cnut of Denmark. He and his followers soon managed to get together the remaining parts, redeveloped it and became saint of Norway. Once again they got together and drove the Cnut out of Norway. Medieval Norway
The history of Norway before the age of the Vikings is indistinct from that of the rest of Scandinavia. In the 9th cent. the country was still divided among the numerous petty kings of the fylker. Harold I , of the Yngling or Scilfing dynasty (which claimed descent from one of the old Norse gods), defeated the petty kings (c.900) and conquered the Shetlands and the Orkneys, but failed to establish permanent unity. Harold's campaigns drove many nobles and their followers to settle in Iceland and France. In the next two centuries Norsemen raided widely in W Europe and established the Norse duchy of Normandy. Harold himself concentrated on developing a dynasty; before he died (c.935) the country was divided among his sons, but one of them, Haakon I , defeated (c.935) his brothers and temporarily reunited the kingdom. Christianity, brought by English missionaries, gained a foothold under

Despite its neutrality, Norway was not able to avoid occupation by Germany in World War II. In 1949, neutrality was abandoned and Norway became a member of NATO. Discovery of oil and gas in adjacent waters in the late 1960s boosted Norway's economic fortunes. The current focus is on containing spending on the extensive welfare system and planning for the time when petroleum reserves are depleted. In referenda held in 1972 and 1994, Norway rejected joining the EU. Expert Norway History Vacation Planners

By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Norwegians were Norsemen, or Normansthe Vikings who traded and raided throughout northern Europe from about 800 to 1100 AD. Early European chronicles describe those forays, which changed and greatly influenced the culture and history of Europe. Words of German dialect spoken by Vikings resembled the language spoken in England at the time. The daring and bravery with which they wandered the seas was told in many colorful stories and poems, called sagas.
Skillful and daring seamen, they were the most efficient shipbuilders in Europe. As early as 787, they began to attack the coasts of England. They settled Greenland and Iceland, and from there, they sailed as far as the eastern borders of North America, which they called Vinland. It is believed that they reached the coast of North America in the 900's, but later abandoned their settlements there.
Even though Vikings were farmers in their homeland, spending their spare time playing quite peaceful games similar to chess, and various dice games, in their adventurous invasions on the sea early Vikings loved war and fighting. They wore horned helmets and carried bronze lances and curved trumpets. They killed, stole, and destroyed every place they landed. These first invasions were simply acts of piracy, but in some cases these invasions led to some very important settlements. They built the city of Dublinthe capital of modern Irelandin about 840. The city was the center of Viking power in Ireland, and the influence of Norwegian Vikings in Ireland and Scotland lasted throughout the Middle Ages.
