Norwegian norsk ) is a North Germanic language spoken primarily in Norway , where it is an official language. Together with Swedish and Danish , Norwegian forms a continuum of more or less mutually intelligible local and regional variants (see Danish language#Classification These continental Scandinavian languages together with the insular languages Faroese and Icelandic , as well as some extinct languages, constitute the North Germanic languages (also called Scandinavian languages ). Faroese and Icelandic are hardly mutually intelligible with Norwegian in their spoken form, because continental Scandinavian has diverged from them. As established by law and governmental policy, there are two official forms of written Bokmål (literally "book language") and Nynorsk (literally "new Norwegian"). The Norwegian Language Council recommends the terms "Norwegian Bokmål" and "Norwegian Nynorsk" in English. There is no officially sanctioned standard of spoken Norwegian, and most Norwegians speak their own dialect in all circumstances. The sociolect of the urban upper and middle class in East Norway, upon which Bokmål is primarily based, can be regarded as a

The Norwegian alphabet consists of 29 letters, the first 26 or which are the same as the Latin alphabet used in English . The three last letters are and . In addition to the 29 official letters, there are several diacritical signs in use (somewhat more in Nynorsk than Bokmål ): à ä ç é è ê ñ ó ò ô ü. The diacritical signs are not compulsory, but may alter the meaning of the word dramatically, e.g.: for (for), fór (have gone), fòr (meadow) and fôr (fodder).

Encyclopedia N NO NOR : Norwegian language
Norwegian is a Germanic language spoken in Norway . Speakers of Norwegian often find spoken Swedish and Danish mutually intelligible , though differences in dialects in all countries create significant differences. Together with these two languages as well as Faroese and Icelandic , Norwegian belongs to the North Germanic languages (also called Scandinavian languages). Faroese and Icelandic, although the same language 800 years ago, are no longer mutually intelligible with Norwegian in their spoken form. From the 16th to the 19th centuries, Danish was the standard written language of Norway. As a result, the development of modern written Norwegian has been subject to strong controversy related to nationalism , rural versus urban discourse, and Norway's literary history. Bokmål (literally "book language") and Nynorsk (literally "new Norwegian"). The Norwegian Language Council recommends the terms "Norwegian Bokmål" and "Norwegian Nynorsk" in English, but these are seldom used. The language question in Norway has been subject to much controversy during the past generations. Though not reflective of the political landscape in general, written Norwegian is often described as a spectrum ranging from the conservative to the radical. The reason is that successive spelling reforms have resulted in an increased number of optional forms in spelling and grammar, allowing for greater possibility of combining elements from both written forms, particularly in the Bokmål variant. The current forms of Bokmål and Nynorsk are considered moderate forms of conservative and radical versions of written Norwegian, respectively.

Written Danish and Norwegian are particularly close, though the pronunciation of all three languages differs significantly. Proficient speakers of any of the three languages can understand the others. There are two official forms of written Norwegian - Bokmål (which may be translated as "Standard Norwegian, literally it is meaning "book language") and Nynorsk (literally "New Norwegian"). The Norwegian Language Council however recommends the terms Norwegian Bokmål and Norwegian Nynorsk in English. There is also another widely used but unofficial written form of the Norwegian language, Riksmål (Traditional Standard Norwegian) as well as the small minority form Høgnorsk (conservative, non-official Nynorsk). Bokmål or Riksmål (the differences between them are comparable to British vs. American written English) are used by the majority, around 85-90 % of the population (92 % in written publications). Speakers of this language often refer to it as simply "Norwegian"; others may prefer "Dano-Norwegian". Nynorsk is used by around 10-15 % of the population (8 % in written publications), particularly in Western Norway. Norwegian spoken language consists of many different dialects, the majority of which are closer to Nynorsk than to Bokmål. The dialects used to have low prestige, not being widely spoken outside the local communities, but for the last 20 years there has been a dialect revival, and most people will speak their local dialect even when talking to a stranger. One notable exception is the area around the capital Oslo in Eastern Norway, where half of the country's population lives. Here the traditional dialects have largely been abandoned for the standard language (
