    N.S. government cancels diabetic cuts
Planned to pay for just 100 blood test strips per year
CBC News The Nova Scotia government backed down Wednesday on a plan to cut health benefits to diabetic seniors after an outcry. The government had advised every pharmacy and doctor in the province that as of April 1, Pharmacare would only cover 100 strips per year used by non-insulin diabetics to test their blood-sugar level. Paulette Dann, who has to test her blood sugar twice a day, was upset at the prospect of having to pay for the remaining 630 strips she needs every year. Each time Dann does a test, she uses a test strip worth about $1. "I think it's terrible. Poor old seniors get hit so hard. If there's going to be a government cut, the first person they go after are the seniors," she said. Retired teacher Bob Kilvert, who is also diabetic, scoffed at the notion the province could save the $8.5 million it claimed it could by reducing coverage.

Nova Scotia government designates Blue Mountain - Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area
April 28, 2009
The provincial government made the announcement on April 21st, one day ahead of Earth Day. This follows through on a promise made by the Province in October 2007 to designate these lands as a legally-protected wilderness area.
The wilderness area designation will save the lands from the type of sprawling development that has claimed so much forest and wild space near Halifax.
The wilderness area designation will also put a stop to clearcutting and open-pit mining in the area. In the past, several attempts were made to remove the top of Blue Mountain Hill for aggregate. The wilderness area designation will put a stop to that, once-and-for-all.
In addition to the wilderness area designation on public lands, the Halifax Regional Municipality has also committed to establishing a regional park on adjoining lands.

ACTION ALERT: Demand the Nova Scotia government rescind contract with private health care clinic
March 20, 2008 As reported by CBC News on March 12th, Nova Scotia Health Minister Chris d'Entremont announced that the province agreed to sign a one-year, $1-million contract that allows surgeons with the Capital District Health Authority to use operating-room facilities in Dartmouth, N.S., owned by Scotia Surgery Inc. This private orthopedic clinic is renting its facilities out at a rate of $500 an hour for 500 publicly-paid surgeries over the next year, starting in April 2008. UPDATE (April 16, 2008): THE CONTRACT WAS OFFICIALLY SIGNED MARCH 28TH, 2008 AND THE FIRST PUBLICLY-FUNDED SURGERY HAPPENED ON APRIL 1ST, 2008. A COPY OF THIS CONTRACT CAN BE VIEWED HERE: This contract marks the beginning of a slippery slope towards the privatization of our health care system in Nova Scotia. Premier MacDonald doesn't even deny this in his Opinion Editorial published in the Chronicle Herald yesterday. As Guy Caron, Health Care Campaigner with The Council of Canadians points out, "Studies have shown that private clinics have higher costs, lower health outcomes, provide no public accountability, and draw health care professionals from the public system."
