New Helicopter Design Would Investigate Nuclear Disasters
The robot is expected to easily maneuver any terrain, including expected bomb craters, as part of its investigation, said Michael Rose, a graduate student in mechanical engineering, from Gilroy, Calif. The team plans to make the robot water proof, in the event that it comes across water - busted water mains, lakes, rain puddles, etc. "The electronics must be protected from the harmful elements," Rose said. by Staff Writers
Blacksburg VA (SPX) Mar 08, 2010
Students at Virginia Tech's Unmanned Systems Laboratory are perfecting an autonomous helicopter they hope will never be used for its intended purpose. Roughly six feet long and weighing 200 pounds, the re-engineered aircraft is designed to fly into American cities blasted by a nuclear weapon or dirty bomb. The helicopter's main mission would be to assist military investigators in the unthinkable: Enter an American city after a nuclear attack in order to detect radiation levels, map and photograph damage. "It's for a worst-case scenario," said project leader Kevin Kochersberger, a research associate professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Virginia Tech Unmanned Systems Laboratory. His team consists of several graduate and undergraduate students from the mechanical engineering and electrical and computer engineering departments.

Nuclear Disasters and Accidents
Introduction:
One of the scariest things about nuclear power is when something goes wrong and an accident occurs. Radiation is released into the environment and people get hurt. Two of the most famous nuclear accidents occurred at the Three Mile Island reactor 2 in the United States and the Chernobyl reactor 4 in the former Soviet Union. In this text we will discuss these two disasters, along with correcting a few common misconceptions about nuclear accidents.
The Myth of a Reactor Explosion:
It is impossible for any PWR or LWR nuclear reactor to explode like an atomic bomb. This is because in order for an uncontrolled chain reaction to occur that is similar to an atom bomb, the uranium fuel must be extremely enriched, much more than the 4%

Nuclear disasters
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search In March 2009, TIME magazine compiled details of the ten worst nuclear disasters:
  • Chernobyl disaster , April 26, 1986: On the morning of April 26, 1986, reactor number four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded. More explosions followed, and the resultant fires sent radioactive fallout into the air. Four hundred times more fallout was released than that at the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The Chernobyl disaster is considered to be the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history. Goiania accident , September 13, 1987: More than 240 people were exposed to radiation when a junkyard dealer in Goiania, Brazil , broke open an abandoned radiation therapy machine and removed a small highly radioactive piece of cesium chloride . Children, attracted to the bright blue of the radioactive material, touched it and rubbed it on their skin, resulting in the contamination of several city blocks which had to be demolished. K-431 Chazhma Bay , August 10. 1985: During refuelling in Vladivostok, Russia
