9. Nuclear Energy Is The Most Certain Future Source.
Discussion and FAQ from the Formal Reasoning Group (FRG) about nuclear energy sustainability.
http://www-formal.stanford.edu/jmc/progress/nuclear-faq.html
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NUCLEAR ENERGY
by John McCarthy This page discusses nuclear energy as a part of a more general discussion of why human material progress is sustainable and should be sustained. Energy is just one of the questions considered. Up to: Main page on why progress is sustainable Incidentally, I'm Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University, emeritus (means retired) as of 2001 January 1. Here's my main page . I write about sustainability as a volunteer public service. I am not professionally involved with nuclear energy. Here's a new page on Nuclear Energy Now . It is motivated by the Bush Administration in the U.S. having tentatively re-opened the question of building new nuclear plants in the U.S. I hope they persist and are successful. One of the major requirements for sustaining human progress is an adequate source of energy. The current largest sources of energy are the combustion of coal, oil and natural gas. These are discussed in the main page on energy . They will last quite a while but will probably run out or become harmful in tens to hundreds of years. Solar energy will also work but is not much developed yet except for special applications because of its high cost. This high cost as a main source, e.g. for central station electricity, is likely to continue, and nuclear energy is likely to remain cheaper. A major advantage of nuclear energy (and also of solar energy) is that it doesn't put carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. How much of an advantage depends on how bad the CO2 problem turns out to be.

General Atomics Wins Drone Bid

General Atomics said Tuesday it won a $214-million contract to deliver a new class of long-range aerial drones to the U.S. Army, beating out a chief competitor and bolstering its position in one of the fastest-growing segments of the global weapons industry. The deal, which calls for an ultimate delivery of 132 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with a final price tag of $1 billion, is a blow to Northrop Grumman , which already supplies the Army with its Hunter drone. Northrop regarded its Hunter II as the incumbent in the two-company competition. Northrop Grumman The U.S. Department of Defense spends about $2 billion a year on UAVs, but is expected to raise that sum to $3 billion by 2008.

Today, we continue our work in support of current-generation reactor technology while conducting research and development aimed at closing the nuclear fuel cycle and enabling the production of the clean sustainable energy that will be needed for the future. Argonne's scientific and technical diversity provides the full range of capabilities needed to meet this challenge. Working in diverse, multidisciplinary teams, we are using cutting-edge research and modeling/simulation tools to translate fundamental scientific understanding into innovative technologies.
Argonne Facts
(as of Nov. 2010)
  • Owned by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), managed by UChicago Argonne, LLC. Located on 1,500 wooded acres near Chicago. Employs roughly 2,900 people, including about 1,000 scientists and engineers, three-quarters of whom hold doctoral degrees Annual operating budget $540 million supporting upwards of 200 research projects. Scientifically and technically diverse.

Celso Alberto FLURY Titles Works done As my thesis work, I participated in the construction of the Basic Principle's Simulator of Embalse Nuclear Power Plant . Then, after graduated, I do some works related to this simulator since was implemented in the same power plant. I partipated in development of computer digital control of an inverted pendulum (used for control teaching), using a Kalman filter. I also have participated in works for INVAP SE: As the basic design of the Safety Parameter Display System (S.P.D.S.) for RA-6 reactor, and now in design tasks of the Man-Machine Interface for the Egipt MPR reactor control room. As teaching activity, I have participated in the following matter professorship: "Control" in Nuclear Engineering of Instituro Balseiro, and "Servomechanisms" and "Control II" in Electromechanical Engineering with Industrial Automatization Orientation of the Engineering Faculty of La Pampa National University (matters given also in Instituto Balseiro). I'm interested in the following areas Control, Simulation, Informatics and teaching in those subjects. I also am interested in the subjects: Man-Machine Interface, Multimedia and Applied Artificial Intelligence.
