90. Nurses
Stories from Australian nurses who served in Vietnam from 1964 to 1972.
http://users.mildura.net.au/users/marshall/nurses/nurses.htm
AUSTRALIAN NURSES IN VIETNAM
Pain remembered.
With a dash of humour
About 210 Australian nurses travelled to South Vietnam between 1964 and 1972 to care for injured civilians during the war. Susan Hudson talks with a few who have received long overdue recognition for their work.
AFTER THREE DECADES, NURSING AND MEDICAL PERSONNEL WHO WENT TO THE VIETNAM WAR HAVE BEEN AWARDED LOGISTIC AND SUPPORT MEDALS TO HONOUR THEIR SERVICE.
The award ceremony, held earlier this year, gave those who went to Vietnam the opportunity to relive the experience with other volunteers. I was also fortunate enough to hear some of their stories.
The tour of duty was generally six months for nurses, although some spent a full year in Vietnam. Many returned for a second or even a third time.
The first Australian medical team sent to South Vietnam was supplied by the Royal Melbourne Hospital and set up at Long Xuyen in October 1964. The Alfred Hospital, Victoria sent their first team to Bien Hoa in Gia Dinh province in January 1966.
The first team to arrive at the provincial hospital in Bien Hoa had the job of preparing the theatres for surgery. Much of the work fell to four nurses: Canny Coventry, Barbara Phillips, Heather Beveridge and Daphne Amos.

91. Images - WWII Nurses In Movietone Newsreels
A story, with vintage photographs, discussing how nurses were featured in newsreels during the war.
http://www.imagesjournal.com/issue03/features/nurses1.htm
"Accentuate the Positive" and Ignore the Real: Representations of WWII Nurses in Movietone Newsreels
by Jeri Kurtzleben D uring World War II, the Office of War Information (OWI) promoted the nursing corps by producing newsreels. Each newsreel was a carefully orchestrated affair, entailing a great deal of editing and proofing to ensure purposes of recruitment (Doherty, 61). In the hope of attracting more women to the war effort, the OWI made sure that each newsreel used a series of appealing, "positive" representations of the nursing profession (Stevens, 47). However, the OWI's campaign of "positive" representations ultimately failed. In trying to attract prospective nurses and also contain traditional femininity, several less positive images emerged from the OWI's orchestrated newsreels. The newsreels emphasized a "lack of dedication" towards the war effort by focusing on the leisure activities of the nurses, their attention to beauty, and their ineptness at adjusting to the hurried pace war demanded. These reoccurring themes contrasted drastically to the representations of men.
Men are almost always active in the newsreels. Male soldiers are engaged in battle, training or setting up equipment. There are almost no instances where nurses are working. During the "Allied Invasion of Salerno" the men are involved in "constant action and dog fighting" and the "terrifying spectacle and pandemonium of war."

Military Nurses in Vietnam © Lou Sorrin - Prints Available In Memoriam Women in Vietnam From the wife of a soldier who was wounded: "most of all thank you for the care you gave my husband when he was wounded in Vietnam. And, thank you for all you gave to those who needed your care so much, when you were in Vietnam. I know I speak for the families and loved ones of those who made it home and for the families and loved ones of those who did not make it home: the sacrifices made by you and all of the medical personnel who served in Vietnam may not have been glorified; however, your presence was and continues to be held most dear by those for whom you cared and by their families and loved ones."
