Emily M. Klein
  • Professor of Geology and Geochemistry Duke University
View full profile … Every research cruise holds the potential for a surprising discovery — something that perhaps will overturn conventional wisdom. It takes luck. But it also takes scientists who can work together, think creatively, question assumptions, and follow where the data lead. For Emily Klein, a marine geochemist at Duke University, uncovering the unexpected has become almost routine. Anticipating what surprises await is for her one of the most rewarding parts of research. Emily studies volcanic eruptions and the creation of new crust on the ocean floor. To understand these eruptions, she focuses on processes that take place beneath the ocean floor, such as where the magma comes from and how it moves through the crust. Emily finds clues to these hidden processes by studying the chemical makeup of lava collected from the ocean floor. The presence of crystals and variations in the amounts of both common and rare elements and isotopes in the lava can tell Emily a great deal about magma’s journey to the surface.
Hess Deep
New ocean crust is created along the mid-ocean ridges that thread their way through the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. These undersea volcanic mountain chains rise at the edges of diverging tectonic plates. As the plates pull apart, magma wells up from the magma chamber, pushing through cracks in the crust towards the surface. Magma that does not reach the surface solidifies in these cracks, forming slabs of lava inside the crust called dikes.

Oceanographer/Marine Biologist
Oceanographers help us gain a better understanding of how our oceans, and living creatures in them, function as an ecosystem. Oceanography contains a wide range of jobs including engineers, marine biologists, and zoologists (people who study animals). People with skills in these and other areas are involved in oceanography because Earth has more oceans than land, and it is a huge task to understand how the oceans work. One of the better-known careers in oceanography is marine biology. While oceanographers study oceans as a whole, marine biologists focus on the living creatures in different types of water, not just huge oceans. They also study life in seas, bays, and other large bodies of water. Oceanographers may also be technicians who specialize in working on equipment used to study the oceans. Oceanography needs technicians who are able to work on boats, electronics, and specialty equipment to make sure that their experiments run smoothly. Oceanographers also get to travel quite a bit to do research and experiments. Although some oceanographers write technical reports in a lab, others explore the oceans. If you enjoy the water, or marine animals then you should think about a career in oceanography.

15. Careers In Oceanography
Chemical oceanographers and marine geochemists investigate the chemical composition of seawater and its interaction with the atmosphere and the sea floor.
http://www.palomar.edu/oceanography/links/Careers.html
Oceanography at Palomar College: Careers in Oceanography Many people associate careers in oceanography as consisting of swimming with marine animals at a marine life park or snorkeling in crystal-clear tropical waters studying coral reefs. In reality, these kinds of jobs are extremely rare and there is intense competition for the few jobs that do exist. Most oceanographers work in fields that use science to solve a particular problem in the ocean. Some examples include:
  • What is the role of the ocean in limiting climate change? What kinds of pharmaceuticals can be found naturally in marine organisms? How does sea-floor spreading relate to the movement of tectonic plates? What economic deposits are there on the sea floor? Can rogue waves be predicted? What is the role of longshore transport in the distribution of sand on the beach? How does a particular pollutant affect organisms in the marine environment?
Preparation for a Career in Oceanography
Preparing yourself for a career in oceanography is probably one of the most interesting and rewarding (yet difficult) paths to travel. The study of oceanography is typically divided into different academic disciplines (or sub-fields) of study. The four main disciplines of oceanography are:
  • Geological oceanography is the study of the structure of the sea floor and how the sea floor has changed through time; the creation of sea floor features; and the history of sediments deposited on it.

17. Marine Careers :: Physical Oceanography
Most oceanographers try to think of the world's oceans as one giant system, collectively known as the global ocean.
http://www.marinecareers.net/field_physical.html
Most oceanographers try to think of the world's oceans as one giant system, collectively known as the global ocean. But before space travel and the inventio of satellites, it was very hard to actually observe the oceans on such a large scale. Pictures of the global ocean from space have given oceanographers important information about ocean currents, temperatures, and other properties. Satellites collect information around the clock and feed it back to earth and individual laboratories and classrooms in real time. This innovation has revolutionized oceanography and given researchers important information about weather and climate, circulation, and environmental problems, such as global warming, global circulation, the world's fisheries decline, and harmful algal blooms. Perhaps more than any other group of oceanographers, physical oceanographers have benefited from satellite technology. Because they study the movement of the oceans and the forces that cause motion, such as winds, waves, and tides, they must look at the ocean from a "big picture" perspective. Shipboard measurements and the development of instruments such as computer programmable buoys that can be left at sea for long periods of time were huge advances for the field of physical oceanography and continue to be important tools, but satellites offer perspectives that early oceanographers may never have dreamed of. Imagine the discoveries Benjamin Franklin, the first person to plot the course of the Gulf Stream, could have made if he'd had access to satellite data!

The Process for... OCEANOGRAPHERS Please research the following: SHIPWRECKS As you know, travel by sea was not always as easy as it is today. Sailors had to rely upon primitive, handheld instruments, personal observations and incomplete or inaccurate navigational maps. Many vessels (and sailors) met their fates during storms, on rocky shores, or even because of encounters with pirates or buccaneers! What does this have to do with oceanographers? Good question. After all, oceanographers study the oceans and the plants and animals it contains. Oceanographers sometimes work closely with underwater archeologists and hydrographers to locate and identify shipwrecks using different types of underwater vehicles. We will be travelling through the Caribbean Sea, the location of hundreds of shipwrecks. Perhaps we will have the opportunity to study and document one of these historical sites on our OCEANQUEST cruise. To prepare, please visit the following websites: (read about how the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution-WHOI-research crew hunts for a famous Revolutionary War wreck) -How did the search begin?

What Is Oceanography? The oceans are part of the thin, outer shell of the Earth that is the home of all the known life in the Universe. Oceanography is the study of the deep sea and shallow coastal oceans: their biology, chemistry, geology and physics together make oceanography a richly interdisciplinary science. Oceanographers aim their work at both practical problems and basic scientific discovery:
    • The oceans cover 7/10 of the Earth's surface. Together with the atmosphere and the 'fresh-water' sphere they make up 'fluid' Earth. Life in the sea has to cope with the fluid medium, as there is little solid ground to anchor on. The coastal and ocean regions are stressed greatly due to increasing human population pressures of fishing, shipping, and recreation.
