Oceanographers at work:
Training and careers for tomorrow's ocean scientists by Kimberly Mace Cruise the web for ocean careers! Link to additional resources for oceanography and marine science careers Oceanography is interdisciplinary, meaning that oceanographers use their knowledge about several basic science fields like chemistry, geology, physics, meteorology, biology, or mathematics to better understand the ocean. Students attending oceanographic institutions will likely specialize in one of the four main areas of oceanography: Physical oceanographers study oceanic circulation, its influence on biological and chemical processes, and the interaction of the ocean with the atmosphere. They also study water masses in the ocean and how energy from the sun or wind reacts with the sea, and apply principles of physics to gain knowledge about ocean circulation. Chemical oceanographers study natural and man-made chemical compounds in the ocean's waters and seafloor, interactions of atmospheric compounds with the ocean's surface, and dissolved and suspended materials in the water column. Geological oceanographers study the shape and material of the seafloor, the origin of seafloor sediments, causes of geological formations, and predict geological events (such as seafloor volcanoes).

        An oceanographer studies the ocean
Oceanography covers a wide range of topics, including marine life and ecosystems, ocean circulation, plate tectonics and the geology of the sea floor, and the chemical and physical properties of the ocean. Just as there are many specialties within the medical field, there are many disciplines within oceanography. Biological oceanographers and marine biologists study plants and animals in the marine environment. They are interested in the numbers of marine organisms and how these organisms develop, relate to one another, adapt to their environment, and interact with it. To accomplish their work, they may use field observations, computer models, or laboratory and field experiments. Chemical oceanographers and marine chemists study the composition of seawater, its processes and cycles, and the chemical interaction of seawater with the atmosphere and sea floor. Their work may include analysis of seawater components, the effects of pollutants, and the impacts of chemical processes on marine organisms. They may also use chemistry to understand how ocean currents move seawater around the globe and how the ocean affects climate or to identify potentially beneficial ocean resources such as natural products that can be used as medicines. Geological oceanographers and marine geologists explore the ocean floor and the processes that form its mountains, canyons, and valleys. Through sampling, they look at millions of years of history of sea-floor spreading, plate tectonics, and oceanic circulation and climates. They also examine volcanic processes, mantle circulation, hydrothermal circulation, magma genesis, and crustal formation. The results of their work help us understand the processes that created the ocean basins and the interactions between the ocean and the sea floor.

Nature of the Work About this section Top Geologists, geophysicists, and oceanographers use their knowledge of the physical makeup and history of the Earth to locate water, mineral, and energy resources; protect the environment; predict future geologic hazards; and offer advice on construction and land use projects. By using sophisticated instruments and analyses of the Earth and water, geological scientists, also known as geoscientists Geology, geophysics, and oceanography are closely related fields; but there are major differences. Geologists study the composition, processes, and history of the Earth. They try to find out how rocks were formed and what has happened to them since formation. They also study the evolution of life by analyzing plant and animal fossils. Geophysicists Oceanographers Many geologists, geophysicists and oceanographers are involved in the search for oil and gas, but other geological scientists play an important role in preserving and cleaning up the environment. Activities include designing and monitoring waste disposal sites, preserving water supplies, and reclaiming contaminated land and water to comply with Federal environmental regulations.

33. Marine Careers :: Chemical Oceanography
Chemical oceanographers are working to understand the ocean's role in this and other theories related to global climate change.
http://www.marinecareers.net/field_chemical.html
The ocean has been referred to as a "chemical soup" because it contains many chemical compounds, elements, gases, minerals, and organic and particulate matter. While water is the most plentiful ingredient, salts are among the most important. Amazingly, despite the major changes that have taken place on Earth throughout history continental collisions, land formations, glaciation the basic composition of seawater has remained relatively constant for millions of years. Chemical oceanographers, also called marine chemists, marine geochemists, or even marine biogeochemists, may study one or a combination of the following: formation of seawater and seafloor sediments, relationships between chemical compounds (both organic and inorganic), how chemical inputs to the ocean (including pollution) affect it, and how the chemistry of the ocean affects or is affected by biological, geological, and physical factors. As with the other disciplines of oceanography, chemical oceanographers rely on and interact with researchers from the other disciplines. The study of carbon and its role in global climate change has captured the attention of chemical oceanographers for decades. Since the industrialization of the 18th century, researchers estimate that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased by 25 percent. Although the scientific debate continues over whether the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide has caused global warming or vice versa, it is generally accepted that modern society has added to the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

The Average Salary of Oceanographers
By Alyssa Owens eHow Contributor updated: October 9, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? As global warming melts the polar ice caps, pushing sea levels to record levels and disrupting currents and ecosystems, experts on protecting and managing natural water systems are more important than ever. In fact, employment of oceanographers, geoscientists who study the world's oceans and coastal waters, is projected to grow more than 20 percent from 2006 to 2016, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Another indicator of the importance of oceanographers is the salary the position demands: the highest paid geoscientists bring home upward of $135,000 each year.
Salaries
  • As of May 2006, the middle 50 percent of U.S. geoscientists brought home between $51,860 and $100,650 annually, according to BLS. The median annual earnings were $72,660 with the lowest 10 percent of geoscientists earning less than $39,740 and the highest 10 percent making annual salaries of more than $135,950. The U.S. government paid oceanographers an average annual salary of $93,461.

Overview: Oceanography is an interdisciplinary science that involves the study of the entire ocean, from the shallow coastal areas to the deepest trenches. It involves geology, biology, chemistry, and physics. Students will learn about some of the important discoveries that oceanographers have made and some areas that they are still investigating. They'll use two Web sites to gather this information, including National Geographic's Blue Frontier site. They will conclude by making posters explaining how oceanography is used and why it's important.
