    Coral Reef Ecosystem Division
    Mission
Reef fish on coral reef at French Frigate Shoals, NWHI The mission of the Coral Reef Ecosystem Division is to provide sound science to enable informed and effective implementation of ecosystem-based management and conservation strategies for coral reef ecosystems of the U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands Region. To accomplish this mission, the Division leads an integrated, interdisciplinary program of ecosystem assessment and long-term monitoring, benthic habitat mapping, and applied research on the coral reef ecosystems of 50 primary islands and atolls in the Hawaiian Archipelago, the Mariana Archipelago (Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands), American Samoa, and the Pacific Remote Island Areas (PRIA). The Division's work supports NOAA and other agencies in meeting mandates of the Coral Reef Conservation Act of 2000 and various executive orders issued to ensure conservation and protection of the nation's coral reef ecosystems.

The Ecological Acoustic Recorder - A Powerful Tool for Monitoring Coral Reef Ecosystems
EAR Technology Using EARs to Monitor Coral Reef Ecosystems Monitoring the changing status of coral reef environments and their inhabitants is a critical management need and a considerable technological challenge, especially on reefs in remote locations. The PIFSC Coral Reef Ecosystem Division (CRED), in partnership with the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology , is using natural ambient sounds as a way to characterize the activity of marine organisms on coral reefs and in surrounding waters. By deploying a device known as the Ecological Acoustic Recorder (EAR), scientists can learn about the presence and activity of marine mammals, fish, crustaceans and other sound-producing marine life. Major components inside the underwater housing of an Ecological Acoustic Recorder (EAR) include the data acquisition and storage module and battery packs. Outside the housing is the hydrophone (directly above hand). Understanding the interactions between species in coral reef biological communities requires long-term observation of relationships between species. However, while existing monitoring instruments are capable of measuring long-term physical environmental trends they currently lack the ability to observe most biological processes. Instruments that monitor biological parameters directly or through surrogates are usually unsuitable for long-term measurements in remote areas because they typically require an optical or other interface that rapidly degrades from marine biofouling. Human-mediated surveys, on the other hand, while effective at measuring biological activity, are often unfeasible for tracking long-term trends because of their inherently high logistical and staffing costs.

Oregon Sea Grant: Coastal science serving Oregon
    Another El Nino year
Posted by: Pat Kight NOAA announcement that El Niño is back El Niño, or the southern oscillation, is a climate phenomenon that occurs every two to five years and has significant effects on global weather, ocean conditions and marine fisheries. While its relative frequency makes El Niño among the most-studied and better-understood large-scale phenomena among climate scientists, it can be a mystery to the rest of us. Oregon Sea Grant can help unravel that mystery through its short publication, El Niño. Profusely illustrated and written for lay audiences, the eight-page, color publication explains how ocean currents, wind and weather patterns come together in the Equatorial Pacific to create El Niño conditions that affect weather and fisheries from South America to Alaska. El Niño can be downloaded free of charge from the Oregon Sea Grant Web site: For more in-depth information, visit under: Oregon Sea Grant climate oceanography publications ...
