We are a chapter of the The Ohio Genealogical Society . We will be celebrating our 40th Anniversary in November 2009. Over the years the society has made great advances in recording information available for genealogists, from all over, who are doing research on ancestors from Ottawa County. Our thanks go to all the members who have spent hours transcribing records from the area. Without them our society would not be possible!
In 1987 Marshland to Heartland, our newsletter was initiated and is still being published. Members receive the newsletter on a quarterly basis
Our goal is to encourage and build interest in genealogy whenever possible. We hope you will find our web site helpful in your research.

Hi, My name is Danice Ryan (antispam by email encoder) and I welcome you to the Jefferson County Website. I welcome any suggestions, ideas, information and help that you are willing to donate to the site.
Many thanks to Jan Cortez who worked hard to get Jefferson County up and running and for all her hard work and efforts over the years prior to entrusting me to continue her work!
If you would be interested in hosting an Ohio County, be sure to contact the State Coordinator.
Jefferson County was erected and organized on July 29, 1797. The county seat is Steubenville.
Jefferson County flag with the county seal image by: Phil Nelson Short History of Jefferson County Jefferson County was named for Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, Secretary of State, and Vice President of the United States at the time of the county's creation. It was created July 29, 1797, by proclamation of Governor Arthur St. Clair. In 1786, the United States built Fort Steuben on a hill overlooking the Ohio River. The fort's purpose was to protect the government surveyors mapping seven ranges of wilderness land from Indian attack. When the surveyors had completed their task, the two companies of troops were transferred to Fort Harmar. In 1794, the abandoned fort caught fire. In the meantime, a small cluster of homes had collected around the fort in 1787, which the residents named La Belle. In 1797, Jefferson County was created, and the site where La Belle stood was selected as the county seat. Bezaleel Wells and James Ross laid out a town around La Belle, whose name was subsequently changed to Steubenville in honor of the charred fort.

Hello and welcome to OHGen.net, a free resource for Ohio genealogy. My name is Sandra Quinn , and you will have noticed that elements of this website have changed. After working for a 3 year term as the volunteer OHGenWeb state coordinator in the USGenWeb project, I am moving on to my other projects. The newly elected state coordinator for the OHGenWeb Project in USGenWeb is Dale Grimm . You can find the USGenWeb OHGenWeb project here at ohgenweb.org The USGenWeb-OHGenWeb volunteers are about as good as they get! I appreciated and enjoyed my time working with them." My personal goal as state and county coordinator has always been to do what I can to provide guidance to the free genealogy resources which can be found and searched online. This is what lead to my idea for the website - OHGen.net , Our History and Genealogy in 2006. It is my wish to continue developing this site for genealogical researchers.
