Imagine yourself as a killer whale. You are swimming around when you decide to stick your head out of the water to take a breath. As you are taking a breath, you see a large stream of thick black oil heading your way. You go back under water only to find other animals dying one by one because the oil is damaging their bodies. This is the way some animals must die in the ocean. They die because of an oil spill occurring in their habitat What’s an oil spill? Oil spills happen when people make mistakes or are careless and cause an oil tanker to leak oil into the ocean. There are a few more ways an oil spill can occur. Equipment breaking down may cause an oil spill. If the equipment breaks down, the tanker may get stuck on shallow land. When they start to drive the tanker again, they can put a hole in the tanker causing it to leak oil. When countries are at war, one country may decide to dump gallons of oil into the other country’s oceans. Terrorists may cause an oil spill because they will dump oil into a country’s ocean. Many terrorists will do this because they are trying to get the country’s attention, or they are trying to make a point to a country. Illegal dumpers are people that will dump crude oil into the oceans because they do not want to spend money on decomposing their waste oil. Because they won’t spend money on breaking up the oil (decomposing it) they will dump oil into the oceans, which is illegal.

    Oil Spills
Updated: Aug. 6, 2010 Oil spills are most commonly caused by tanker accidents, but tankers have not been responsible for the worst spills. Before the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010, the biggest spill of all time was considered to be the leaks caused by Iraqi forces in Kuwait during the 1991 Gulf War, when they opened the valves on several pipelines and tankers; roughly 300 million gallons of oil was released before bombing by American warplanes shut down the pipes. In 1979, the blowout of the Ixtoc I oil well in the Gulf of Mexico released an estimated 140 million gallons of crude into the open sea. The Deepwater drilling rig caught fire and sank about 50 miles off the Louisiana coast on April 20, killing 11 crew members. A massive spill developed when a joint government and industry task force was unable to stop crude oil from streaming out of a broken pipe attached to a well that the rig had been drilling nearly a mile below sea level. It was first estimated that leaks in the pipe were spilling about 1,000 barrels of oil a day

Oil Spills REVISION May 1, 2000 Tarred beaches, dead and dying wildlife, damaged fisheries, contaminated water supplies. These are the short-term effects of an oil spill. In the long-term, toxic materials from oil can remain in the water and on the land for many years. They can build up in the food chain to lethal levels, and destroy or disrupt and area's ecosystem. How Oil Spills Occur: Petroleum is used as a vehicle fuel, heating source for homes and industry, for electricity generation, and as a feedstock for the chemical industry. Because of the huge demand for oil, enormous quantities are moved from production areas to where the oil is used. Oil is pumped from the ground, refined, transported and stored. There are many steps in this process during which oil can spill from well heads, drill rigs, tankers, pipelines and storage tanks. Oil may leak from ocean-going ships during accidental and deliberate spills. Spills can happen on land or water when oil is incorrectly handled, there are railway or truck accidents, tankers or barges collide, the insides of tankers are washed, and when natural oil deposits seep.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Wikinews has related news: This is a reverse-chronological list of oil spills that have occurred throughout the world and spill(s) that are currently ongoing. Quantities are measured in tonnes of crude oil with one tonne roughly equal to 308 US gallons , or 7.33 barrels , or 1165 liters. This calculation uses a median value of 0.858 for the specific gravity of light crude oil ; actual values can range from 0.816 to 0.893, so the amounts shown below are inexact. They are also estimates, because the actual volume of an oil spill is difficult to measure exactly.

Oil Spills
Fifteen years of debate have not resolved the United States public policy issue: "Should we allow for drilling of oil in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge?" To people concerned about oil-spill accidents, such drilling and transporting of oil threatens the areas' rich ecology.
Oil-spill victim. Source: NOAA
Living safely in the Artic refuge now are bears, wolves, foxes, musk oxen, millions of migratory birds, and a 130,000 caribou herd. These animals, and the plants too, can be harmed in three different ways: 1) direct contact, 2) poisoning after ingestion, and 3) destruction of habitat. To people concerned about energy consumption in the U.S. and about the country's dependence on unreliable foreign sources, drilling in the Alaska Refuge could supply all the oil we use over six months to two years. A re oil spills common? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says there are about 70 per day. Typically, these are small and do no serious harm. But big spills do occur sometimes, and the damage to ecosystems can be very great. What to do? This is not the place to discuss world politics or even U.S. government energy and environment policy. There is a strong argument for drilling for more oil, especially now that we have newer drilling techniques that reduce the chances of accidents. But in this ecology lesson, the appropriate thing to do is to learn about what oil spills can do to the environment.

Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill (2010)
Chris Graythen/Getty Images Updated: Nov. 8,  2010 The Latest The lead investigator for the presidential panel investigating the BP oil spill said that he had found no evidence of shortcuts taken to save money Transocean and Halliburton , had cut corners to speed completion of the well, which cost $1.5 million a day to drill. Overview An explosion on April 20 aboard the Deepwater Horizon, a drilling rig working on a well for the oil company BP one mile below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, led to the largest accidental oil spill in history. After a series of failed efforts to plug the leak, BP said on July 15 that it had capped what it had named the Macondo well, marking the first time in 86 days that oil was not gushing into the gulf. Nearly five months after it blew out of control, the federal government finally declared the well dead on September 19th, after pressure tests confirmed that cement that had been pumped into the bottom of the once-gushing well through a relief well formed an effective, and final, seal. The Macondo well and the two relief wells were to be abandoned, following standard industry practices. Nearly five million barrels of oil had gushed from BP's well, according to estimates by government scientists, an amount that outstrips the estimated 3.3 million barrels spilled into the Bay of Campeche by the Mexican rig Ixtoc I in 1979.

The table above shows the largest oil spills on record since 1967. The total volume of oil is given in millions of gallons. Most of the oil spills occurred in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Fewer are happening now, though major oil spills do certainly still occur. When the Exxon Valdez oil spill happened, many people were shocked and horrified. But the ship spilt 10.8 million gallons, almost nothing compared with as many as 428 million gallons for the Ixtoc I in Mexico and other less-known spills. That shows that not all major oil spills receive great publicity, and media coverage is hardly proportional to the total amount of damage done.

The term often refers to marine oil spills, where oil is released into the ocean or coastal waters . Oil spills include releases of crude oil from tankers offshore platforms drilling rigs and wells , as well as spills of refined petroleum products (such as gasoline diesel ) and their by-products, and heavier fuels used by large ships such as bunker fuel , or the spill of any oily refuse or waste oil . Spills may take months or even years to clean up. Oil also enters the marine environment from natural oil seeps Public attention and regulation has tended to focus most sharply on seagoing oil tankers.
