Oil Spills
The worst oil spill in US history occurred on March 24, 1989 in Prince William Sound, Alaska, when the Exxon Valdez, an oil tanker fully loaded with crude oil from the Alaskan Oil Pipeline, foundered on a reef just miles from the port of Valdez.  This southern coast teemed with wildlife.  Fifty pairs of Bald Eagles nested within the Sound, and 2,500 more lived within the archipelago that extends 900 miles to the southwest.   Millions of sea birds and waterfowl in vast colonies nested along the coasts, among them the very rare harlequin duck ( Histrionicus histrionicus ), which had a large breeding population.  More than 20 million shore birds and other arctic species pass through the Sound while on migration, and in all, 219 bird species have been recorded in Prince William Sound (Browne 1989).  The Exxon spill occurred only two weeks before spring migration.      Sea otters ( Enhydris lutris ) numbered at least 10,000 in Prince William Sound, the largest concentration in the world.  Thousands of harbor seals used the islands for feeding and calving. Gray whales fed and migrated through the area, and killer whales had resident pods.  Commercial fishermen caught vast catches of salmon, herring and other food fish.  The coastline, one of the world's most spectacular, is lined with federal, state and native Alaskan protected lands.  Kenai Fjords and Katmai National Parks, Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge and thousands of acres of state and native lands had, until the spill, preserved a magnificent environment almost intact.  Rocky beaches alternated with marshes and sheer cliffs studded with sea bird nests.

    Oil Spills
Oil spills can come from a number of sources, including tankers and oil extraction and storage facilities. Spills from tankers are usually the result of a breach in the hull, either from running aground or hitting an object in the water. Major oil spills, such as the 2006 spill off the coast of Lebanon or the 2002 Prestige accident off the coast of Spain, can pose serious threats to birdlife, fisheries, and marine ecosystems. Spills and accidents tend to get a great deal of publicity when they occur, yet they actually account for a very small percentage of total oil pollution. According to the 2003 National Research Council (NRC) report, Oil in the Sea III: Inputs, Fates, and Effects , 70 percent of anthropogenic source oil that reaches ocean waters is the result of consumer use; in North America it is closer to 85 percent. Much of this oil enters the ocean from runoff related to oil use inland, especially from the transportation sector - a classic example of a non-point source polluter It should be noted that human activity is not solely responsible for oil pollution in the oceans. The NRC estimates that nearly half of the oil that enters the world's oceans is the result of natural processes, including from natural seepage. Though a vast amount of oil enters the ocean from this little-understood phenomenon, it does not appear harmful; however, it does change the surrounding environment. Yet, over time, organisms living in these areas adapt and create ecosystems in which they can survive, and even thrive. Scientists continue to study this phenomenon to better understand how oil changes the way the organisms live.

OUR PLANET IS BEING DESTROYED, ALONG WITH THE INHABITANTS, ONE OILL SPILL AT A TIME
INTRODUCTON TO EXXON VALDEZ OIL SPILL
Prince William Sound, Alaska is one of the most beautiful places of marine environment in the world. Located on the south-central coast of Alaska, about 50 miles southeast of Anchorage, it covers approximately 15,000 square miles. There are numerous islands, bays and fjords with deep low salinity ocean water from the Alaskan Gulf that continually bathe the beaches of the Sound with 15-35 feet waves. The Sound was a place where all inhabitants of life existed together in harmony, until March 24, 1989. The dreadful event that occurred on Good Friday brought an end to a once pure and unspoiled wilderness. Here is the rest of the story: The oil corporations, Exxon and VECO, determined our quality of life 21 years ago during the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup. Exxon assured cleanup workers that the crude oil was not toxic; however anyone who sprayed the beaches became permanently ill from the exposure. Exxon implemented the toxic spraying; OSHA, the Coast Guard, and the state of Alaska authorized the procedure. Beach crews breathed in crude oil that splashed off the rocks and into the air the toxic exposure turned into chronic breathing conditions and central nervous system problems, along with neurological impairment, chronic respiratory disease, leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, liver damage, and blood disease, and other massive health issues. I am only one out of thousands cleanup workers who suffer extreme health problems during and after the 1989 cleanup.

In 2006, the world consumed more than 3.5 billion gallons of oil each day [source: U.S. Dept. of Energy ]. Sixty percent of that oil reached its destination by sea [source: Corn ]. Between 1990 and 1999, an average of 150,000 tons of oil spilled each year into the world's waterways [source: National Academies ]. 2001 was a particularly bad year, with five spills occurring within the same week [source:
