Oklahoma History is usually required in public schools in 4th grade, 8th grade, and again in high school. As a homeschooler, you can teach Oklahoma History when it works best for you. I recommend doing it as a multi-level unit and teaching it once in elementary school, once in junior high and again in high school. Here are some resources I have found that will help you to teach this subject. Oklahoma became the 46th state in the Union on November 16th, 1907. The state's name comes from the Choctaw words "okla" meaning people and "homma" meaning red, literally meaning "red people" more...

Charles Nathaniel Haskell
, Democrat. Served from 1907 to 1911. Oklahoma's first State Governor was born March 13, 1860, in Putnam county, Ohio. He was educated as a lawyer, admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1881, and began practice in Ottawa, Ohio. In 1901, he moved to Muskogee, Indian Territory, where he added to his law practice the promotion of railroads. He was a leader in the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention in 1906. After his term as Governor, from November 16, 1907, to January 9, 1911, he engaged in the oil business. He died July 5, 1933, and is buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Muskogee. more...

    Background:
    A project of the Oklahoma Historical Society, the Oklahoma History Center was in the works for seven years before its opening in November of 2005. Sitting on 18 acres, the 40,000 square foot facility contains 5 main exhibit galleries and over 100 audiovisual interactive opportunities for guests. The goal is to span the entire breadth of Oklahoma's diverse history from Native Americans to oil.
    Hours of Operation:
    Monday through Saturday - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Closed Sunday as well as New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day
    Location:
    800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive in Oklahoma City.
