Oklahoma libraries receive grants for Internet upgrades
Journal Record, The (Oklahoma City) Jul 2, 2010 by M Scott Carter
Forty-four Oklahoma libraries will share $3.3 million in federal and private grants to upgrade their broadband Internet access, officials with the Oklahoma Department of Libraries announced last week. Susan McVey, ODL executive director, said the state received a major grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to upgrade broadband and computing capabilities at 44 public library sites across the state. A $2.3 million grant, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will be coupled with a $1 million matching grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, for a total of $3.3 million. "We are thrilled that our grant application was successful," McVey said. "High-speed access and new equipment will open up a host of educational and economic opportunities for these communities."

University of Oklahoma Libraries Oklahoma City Conference March 4-5, 2010 Summary of Presentations Tim J. Watts Jay Jordan, President and CEO, Online Computer Library Center, “Climbing Out of the Box and Into the Cloud: Building Web-Scale for Libraries.” Libraries will be able to spend more money and effort on innovation instead of maintenance by moving to the computing cloud, where applications and data are stored on the Internet instead of locally. This “web-scale” will increase the sharing of data and allow more interoperability, giving staff time to be more innovative. WorldCat Local, from OCLC, is an example of moving into the cloud. Libraries are full of sacred cows – things we have always done – but economic realities will force us to give them up. Librarians must change and concentrate on the users; when people’s expectations, information needs and behaviors change, libraries must change with them. Delivery of information makes up the supply chain, and libraries must concentrate on individuals and be hooked into the supply chain.

The building was a three-story structure with a basement, and the library was located on the second floor, in the east wing. The first person to serve in the capacity of librarian was student N. E. Butcher in 1894, and the majority of materials in the library were donated by local citizens. In January, 1903, the Administration building was destroyed by a fire, taking with it all of the books and magazine subscriptions the library held, save those that were checked out to students and faculty. As soon as the second Administration building was complete the library was temporarily housed on its first floor. Within a few months of the fire, the Board of Regents accepted $30,000 from Andrew Carnegie for the construction of a new university library. The two-story Carnegie Building was completed in December 1904, and over the Christmas holiday the library was moved there. The library reading room and stacks were located on the first floor, while a large meeting room comprised the second floor. The basement provided space for the Law Library and law student recitation rooms.

Primary Sources. What is a Primary Source? A primary source is usually a record made at the time of an event by participants or by firsthand observers.

Primary Sources What is a Primary Source? A primary source is usually a record made at the time of an event by participants or by firsthand observers. Examples include, but are not limited to, contemporary newspaper or magazine accounts, diaries, correspondence, parliamentary proceedings, government reports, government/organizational archives, and manuscripts. Sometimes these records are reprinted much later than the time at which they were written, but they are still primary sources. Primary sources can be very different for different subjects. If you are writing a paper about an early female physician, for example, then her diary would be a primary source. If you are studying mid-twentieth century diplomatic history between the United States and Iraq, the State Department records (such as Confidential U.S. State Department Central Files: Iraq, 1955-1959, available on Microfilm 498) would be a primary source. If you are unsure what constitutes a primary source for your topic, ask your instructor for some ideas. How Do I Find Primary Source Material?

Old Brookville, NY, Febr uary http://libraries.ou.edu/resources/LORA/ "We were pleased with the level of customization available with WebFeat and appreciate the extra effort put forth by the WebFeat staff to accommodate our needs,” noted Matthew Smith, Library Systems Analyst at University of Oklahoma Libraries. “The WebFeat team worked closely with us to make needed modifications, and their API allowed us to fully customize our installation and integrate federated searching seamlessly into our library to provide the best possible experience for our patrons " The University of Oklahoma Libraries’ federated search system is designed to facilitate database searching for novice users while also being a powerful tool for experienced researchers. Pat Weaver-Meyers, Technical Director at University of Oklahoma Libraries added, “We hope that WebFeat will serve as a discovery tool for library users who are unfamiliar with our databases and don’t really know how to get started searching among the various subject databases we have available." Todd Miller, President of WebFeat commented, “We are very impressed with the University of Oklahoma Libraries’ use of the WebFeat API in their system. This demonstrates the University staff’s technical savvy and willingness to think outside the box in crafting an information solution for their users."
