History of the Modern Olympic Games
The origin of the modern Olympic Games dates back to France at the end of the 19th century. Motivated by the ideal of peace, educator Pierre de Coubertin came up with the idea of reviving the Greek tradition of the Games of the Olympiad to bring nations together every four years. On June 23, 1894, de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to organize the Games. Two years later, in 1896, the first Olympic Games of the modern era took place in Athens with approximately 250 athletes from 14 countries. Motivated by the ideal of peace, Pierre de Coubertin conceived the idea of reviving the Greek tradition of the Games of the Olympiad as a means to bring nations together. Olympic Games history
Updated 05 August 2004, 17.41
The Olympic Games were named after the village of Olympia in Greece where they originally took place in 776 BC. Athletes from the Greek world competed in a range of events, including athletics, wrestling and chariot racing every four years until 393 AD. Though the prizes were modest, the honour of winning was great. In 393 AD, the emperor Theodosius abolished the Olympics because he thought they were not religious enough. Birth of the modern Olympics A Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin campaigned for years to revive the Olympics and in 1896 his dream came true: The first modern Olympics Games took place in Athens in 1896 at the Panathenean Stadium. Although Athens is the birthplace of the Olympics, this year's Games will only be the second time the modern Olympics have been held there since 1896.
This year's official mascots are named after Greek Gods; Phevos, the god of light and Athena the goddess of wisdom and patron of the city of Athens. The original marathon The marathon was first run in 1896. It celebrates the legendary feat of a Greek soldier who, in 490 BC, is supposed to have run about 25 miles from Marathon to Athens with the news that the Persians had been defeated, before keeling over and dying.

HISTORY OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES
According to the Greek history , the first Olympic Games in the Greek Antiquity can be traced back to the 776 BC. The games were dedicated to the 12 Olympian Gods and were hosted on the ancient green plains of Olympia, the place was famous for its magnificent great temples of the two gods Zeus and his wife Hera. The games initially had a very religious character combined by a number of ancient sport events, which many of those were based on the ancient Greek mythology.
The ancient Olympic Games had an important position in the life of the Ancient Greeks. The Olympiad it was a time of union, with a four-year interval. The participants came from every corner of the Greek world to compete for the ultimate prize, the olive wreath and the return to their city-states as heroes. But the Olympic values apart from the victory, it was themselves which had the special meaning in the Games, the noble competition and effort to combine the body, mind, and will in a balanced whole.
As the Olympic Games developed, so did developed the procedures such as the standard schedule of the events and the

Brief Record of Malaysia's Participation in Past Olympic Games since 1956 Prior to the formation of the Federation of Malaya Olympic Council in 1953 and its subsequent recognition by the IOC in 1954, some Malayans may have participated in the Olympic Games, representing their countries of origin, such as China and India. After receiving the recognition of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1954, the Federation of Malaya Olympic Council, as it was then known, sent a contingent of 33 athletes from 6 sports to participate in the Olympic Games in 1956 in Melbourne. Since then the Olympic Council of Malaysia, as it is known since 1964, has been participating in all the Olympic Games, except the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.
The Olympic Contingent of the Federation of Malaya to the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games comprised six athletes, two swimmers, 18 Hockey players, three Weightlifters and four shooters. There was only one female athlete in the Contingent, Ms. Annie Choong, who participated in Athletics. Amongst the Olympians were Koh Eng Tong, the 1950 British Empire Weightlifting gold medallist in the Featherweight Division and Tan Kim Bee, the silver medallist in the Light Heavyweight Division. The Hockey team finished 9th out of 12 teams. The Chef de Mission was Mr. Herman Marie de Souza (Hockey) and the Flag Bearer was Tan Eng Bee (Weightlifting)

The Greek athletic games, otherwise commonly recognized as the Panhellenic Games, were an integral part of Greek life. They combined religion, sport, and music into extravagant festivals involving peoples throughout Mediterranean. Not only did they attract thousands of participants and spectators to their venues, but they also promoted solidarity among the various Greek city-states. By the Classical period, their influence was felt throughout Greece. There were four main games: the Olympic Games, Pythian Games, Nemean Games, and Isthmian Games. The games at Olympia were the oldest and most famous of these. They all began quite humbly as religious ceremonies. While the games had a small religious aspect throughout their history, this role diminished as time progressed. Mythological evidence suggests that the athletic events originally served as entertainment for humans and gods and were loosely associated with sacrificial offerings. At first they were purely local events most likely spanning two or three days, consisting only of dancing, running, and wrestling The centrepiece of every Olympics is the track and field stadium. Stadium Australia has built the largest Olympic arena in history with 110,000 spectators able to see the opening and closing ceremonies, track and field program and the final of the men's soccer tournament. Under an agreement brokered by the Olympic Co-ordination Authority, the majority of the cost of the $A615 million stadium is being borne by the private sector with the NSW public having ultimate ownership of the venue. Stadium Australia has already hosted several world-class events including top-flight rugby league and union, American NFL and the FIFA All Stars.

I regret that individual and personal responses are not possible. 10/01/2000: Hello, I found your site very informative. I was wondering if you knew anything about how a city is chosen to host the olympics? Or anysites that have info on that? I am doing a school report and I can't find out anything!! thanx so much sarah! (9th grade, New York, USA).

However a problem has come up in this bid procedure - corruption. In the past two years it has been revealed that some members of the IOC were actually bribed in order to get their votes for bidding cities. Salt Lake City, the host of the next Winter Olympic Games (2002) apparently earned some votes through bribery. The IOC has always had a very good reputation for honesty and character, but this reputation has been tarnished through the bribery scandal. The IOC investigated its members and kicked some of them out. Others were warned. Then they changed their procedure. In the future only a small group of the IOC (there are over 100 members) will visit each city and report back to the rest of the membership. Nobody knows if this will be successful.
For more information try some search engines and look up "BID CITY" or "OLYMPIC BID".
