Olympic Games History
Modern Olympics, which we see today, was the brain child of Frenchmen, Pierre de Coubertin, who was inspired by the Olympic festivals and decided to revive the games. Many attempts were made to revive the games, but Coubertin's efforts bore fruits in the late 19th century, only because of his sheer persistence. Eventually, the International Olympic Committee was founded in 1894 and the first modern Olympics were held two years later in 1896 in Athens.

ORIGIN :: By about 650 B.C., the Ancient Games were held over five days, involving running, wrestling, the pentathlon, horse riding and chariot racing. Participants came to compete from every corner of the Greek world aiming at the ultimate prize - an olive wreath and a "heroic" return to their city-states. Athletes competed in the nude and upon victory were awarded a crown of wild olive leaves. Women and slaves were strictly forbidden to attend the Games under the punishment of death. BANNED :: The Ancient Games were held for almost 1200 years until 393 A.D. when Roman Emperor Theodosius I banned all pagan festivals (the Olympics celebrated the Greek god Zeus). He asserted that the Games placed an excessive public focus on athletic and spiritual affairs and abolished them.

A Brief History of the Ancient Olympic Games
Introduction The ancient Olympic festival, from which we derive the Olympic games of today, was a pivotal force in ancient Greece. Its recorded history spans more than a millennium—from 776 BC to AD 392, a total of 293 Olympiads. The Games developed gradually, mirroring the rise of classical Greek culture. The ancient Olympics were based on a philosophy of balance between physical/athletic and spiritual/moral development that was a cornerstone of Greek democracy. As the ideals and political forces that inspired the Games began to deteriorate, so did the festival. Under Roman rule, the Olympics experienced a renaissance, but in a form not true to its original spirit. Finally, by decree of the Christian emperor Theodosius I, the Games were abolished in AD 393. So, how did the ancient Olympic games come to be? Why did they become so famous in the ancient world? Why were so many magnificent structures built at Olympia? The answers to these questions trace a fascinating journey through the history of ancient Greece, "the cradle of civilization."

Brief Autobiography
I graduated from the prestigious Central High School of Philadelphia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967. Beginning my college education in the five year program of architecture at Penn State University I changed direction and entered the Physical Education department. During the late 60's and the Vietnam war era I entered Air Force ROTC but left when I was told I would be trained as a navigator and not as a pilot. I graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. My entire career has revolved around the sport of wrestling, the Olympic Games, history, law, art, international relations and sport, language and books.
I am a Physical Education teacher by training (BS in Physical Education, Penn State University, 1971; MAT in Physical Education, S.E. Missouri State University 1979; Ph.D./abd Penn State University 1977-82, 1987-90). My education and academic training coincided with my athletic career. I lettered in wrestling at Penn State University and through wrestling I learned about the Olympic Games. Since 1971 I have been a Health and Physical Education teacher in several public schools and two universities. For five years I lived in Europe and served as acting Department Chairman for Sport and Student Activities at the John F. Kennedy School in West Berlin, Germany.
After college I continued to compete in Olympic freestyle wrestling in order to earn a spot on the US Olympic Team. I tried out for the US teams in 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984. In 1972 I placed 2nd in the qualifying tournament in Lancaster, PA and in 1976 I placed 4th in the qualifying tournament in Binghampton, NY. Although I attended the Olympic Games in Munich (1972) and Montreal (1976) as a visitor I never realized my dream of wrestling in the Olympic Games.
