Stop The Bus
The outgoing Olympic organisers did a wonderful job with colour, pageantry, silver-clad abseilers and aerial trapeze artists. Athletes danced and cheered, and the IOC president declared the games "exceptional". And London had ... the bus.

Something else
It was bound to happen... I am just starting to feel comfortable about the place and it is almost time to go. I know how the transport system works, I am aware of the limitations of the official press briefings and I have learnt what to avoid at the complimentary media breakfasts. The Games only go for 16 days and after the swimming program is done, it is a quick slide towards the end. There may be veteran Olympic journalists here, but every Games are different and Beijing has been what they call "something else". Posted by Karen Barlow on August 22, 2008 in

OLYMPIC GAMES MEDALLISTS
The modern Olympics were first held in 1896. The Games are held every 4 years (this period is known as an Olympiad) although an additional "intercalated" event, not officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee, was introduced in 1906. The 1910 "intercalated" Games were cancelled and the idea dropped. The 1916, 1940 and 1944 events were also not held due to the First and Second World Wars.

Rio de Janeiro deserved the Games. They bid numerous times, and the Games have never been held in South America before. I'm glad they won. Also, we just had a Summer Games in America in 1996. And a Winter Games in 2002. The U.S. shouldn't hog the Games.

Know How Game Rules Sport Stars Special reports Disabled Sports Extreme Sports Olympics Speciality Events Gymnastics, Greco/Roman origin of an Olympic sport. Gymnastics is defined as exercises for the balanced development of the body, or the competitive sport derived from these exercises. Olympic gymnastics is split into completely different disciplines for men and women. Men compete on pommel horse, rings, parallel bars, vault, horizontal bar, floor exercises, and on the trampoline. Women compete on the balance beam, vault, floor exercises, uneven parallel bars, in rhythmic gymnastics and on the trampoline.
The ancient Greeks (who invented the building called a gymnasium for them) and the Romans practiced gymnastics, but it was not until the 20th century that gymnastics became widespread. Their eventual success came after their adoption for American military training, their placement on the program of the revived Olympic Games in 1896, and the inclusion of physical education in the curriculum of many schools.
Gymnastics for men usually emphasized power and strength, while those for women focused on grace of movement. In 1972, however, Olga Korbut, a 17-year-old gymnast from the Soviet Union, captivated everyone with her innovative and explosive routines. At the Olympics, her diminutive prettiness enthralled the Munich audience, and it was here that she became the first person ever to do a backward somersault off the uneven parallel bars. In all she collected three gold medals, for the balance beam, floor exercise and team events, and a silver medal for the uneven parallel bars. Korbut and her coaches invented two new gymnastic moves, the Korbut Salto and the Korbut Flip. She became a role model for many children all over the world and local gymnastic clubs reported a massive surge of young girls wanting to join.

Where the Olympic flag can be seen?
The IOC guards the dignity of the Olympic symbol and therefore limits the hoisting of Olympic flags to specific situations. Now that the celebration of the 19th Olympic Winter Games is over, it's asif the Olympic Movement started wearing a dull winter fur, hardly showing any colour at all. But during Salt Lake 2002 there Olympic flags where flying everywhere.
    • At the Opening Ceremony a large Olympic Flag was carried into the stadium and hoisted in a prominent position, where it remained for the duration of the Games.
    • Several Olympic flags, and flags of each participating country, were flown at each Olympic event and over the Olympic Village.
    • A large number of Olympic flags was flown throughout Salt Lake City.
    • At the Closing Ceremony the Oslo flag was returned to the president of the IOC, who passed it on to the Burgomaster of
