Print this page CULTURAL NORMS With its well-deserved reputation for hospitality, Oman welcomes visitors and expatriates with open arms. Characterized by its warm, friendly people, Oman is also distinctive among many Gulf countries for its tolerance. While Oman is a Muslim country steeped in tradition, expatriate residents enjoy a progressive culture as illustrated by a modern infrastructure and acceptance of religious differences and social habits. Foreigners are free to practice their own religion, alcohol is served in major hotels and restaurants, and the dress code is relaxed but appropriate. Women are not only able to drive and go out in public unescorted, they are a significant part of Oman’s workforce, and even populate Ministry and Consultative Council positions in the government.
Under Oman’s leadership, the Oman Renaissance has flourished. With membership in the United Nations, the Arab League, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and a free trade agreement with the United States, Oman enjoys pride of place with the world’s progressive nations while guarding its heritage and character. Living in Oman, you’ll have the opportunity to explore a wealth of

Piaroa (Kuakua, Guagua, Quaqua): 12,000 including 130 Maco (1987 UBS); 80 in Colombia (1991 Adelaar). Venezuela: South bank of the Orinoco River, inland from the Paguasa River to Manipiari, Amazonas ( Map ). Large but inaccessible area. Colombia: Near the Sáliba. Dialects: Maco (Mako, Itoto), Piaroa. 'Ature' (Adole) may be an alternate name. Possibly 50% of the men are bilingual in Maquiritare, Yabarana, or Spanish. Culture The Piaroa Tribe lives in the Amazon rain forest of Venezuela. Their mode of transportation is by the bongo, a form of dugout canoe with which they navigate the tributaries of the Amazon. The Piaroa Indians are an indigenous Indian tribe that lives in the Amazon rainforest near the Orinoco River in Venezuela. They are considered one of the most peaceful societies in the world, with very little violence in the communities. In fact, the Piaroa believe that any man who kills another man will himself die a terrible death (including outsiders,) making murder unknown and nonexistent to them. By eliminating ownership and control over others’ labor rather than civil law and punishment, the Piaroa have maintained the peace. The basics behind the Piaroa peacefulness are their religious beliefs.

Omani food is generally prepared with generous use of an assortment of marinades, spices and a range of herbs. Even then, the Omani cuisine is not as spicy as the food in other Asian countries, which makes the Omani cuisine all the more special and palatable. However the culinary methods and the spiciness vary with the different regions of Oman. More..

Oman Culture
The culture of Oman is influenced by the principles of Islamic religion.
As followers of Islam, the Omanis offer their prayers to the almighty five times every day. Likewise, Ramadan, which is the holy month of fasting and other festivals of Islam are extremely significant events of Omani culture.During Ramadan, Omani Muslims are not supposed to eat or drink throughout the day. The fast ends at sunset, by a family gathering for the Ifta treat. This feast usually consists of dates and rice. When it comes to dress code in public places, Oman culture is quite liberal compared to the other Islamic countries in the Middle East. Nevertheless, the dress code should conform to levels of decency. For instance, Women are expected to wear tops with sleeves and full length trousers and skirts. Likewise, Men are also expected to wear full length trousers and sleeved shirts. This dress code is relevant to urban areas of Oman, including its capital Muscat. For other areas, a more conservative dress code is expected.

Japanese Culture A Primer For Newcomers
Culture Shock 101
NO!! This is not another site on Japanese Zen and rock gardens, nor fantasizing about pretty *Important* : Japan has a lot of positive traits, and a lot of negative ones also. You'll find Japan captivating, bewildering, enchanting, enraging, humorous, frustrating, loose, uptight, accomodating, and anal-retentive sometimes all at the same time. However, the contents of this site center more on the negative aspects than the positive ones since these are what make life for westerners more difficult here. They are meant to show more of what culture shock is experienced and are * NOT * to be taken as an accounting of the number of good traits vs. the bad.
Here are a few basic traits to remember

  • The Gaijin Complex
  • Osekkai! Mind Your Own Business!
  • "Goatism" Giseisha and Urami On Scapegoats, Victims, and Envy
  • Amae Dependency

35. Spiritual Refugee By Junko Chodos
Essay by artist Junko Chodos on being Japanese and encountering western culture.
http://www.crosscurrents.org/Chodoswinter2003.htm
SPIRITUAL REFUGEE
by Junko Chodos Hans Christian Andersen begins the story “The Little Mermaid” with a description of the place where the little mermaid princess came from. It was far, far from land, where no anchor could reach the bottom and where you would have to pile many church towers on top of each other before one of them emerged above the surface of the ocean. The little mermaid princess fell in love with a human prince when she saw him dancing at a party on the deck of the big royal boat illuminated brightly, crossing the ocean. She wanted to dance with him and to be a human to marry him: One must have a certain amount of freedom to be honest as an individual. Without this freedom there is no way to take responsibility for one’s own actions and thoughts and therefore there is no inner life, no place where one experiences oneself as an ethical being. Without that private place, others are merely strangers and one is a stranger even to oneself. In a society that does not allow for the existence of individuality, the effort to become an individual invites persecution. Although this sort of persecution is not as visible as political persecution it is nevertheless fatal to one’s spiritual being, so the persecuted person becomes an exile. One usually goes into this sort of exile only after a sustained battle against the cultural system in which one’s whole life is wrapped up. The battle is painful. Wounded and bleeding, one becomes an exile. These people I call “spiritual refugees”; I consider myself one of them.

Oman : Culture
The majority of Omanis are Ibadi Muslims, followers of Abd Allah ibn Ibad. around 25 % are Sunni Muslims and live primarily in Sur and the surrounding area and in Dhofar. They form the largest nonIbadi minority. The Shia minority live along the Al Batinah coast in the Muscat-Matrah region. This minority includes the Khojas, the Baharina of Iraqi or Iranian descent, and the Ajam, of vague origin but generally considered to originate in Iran. Ibadism is an outgrowth of the Kharijite movement, a variant form of Islam practiced by descendants of a sect that seceded from the principal Muslim body after the death of the Prophet Muhammad in A.D. 632. Kharijites reject primogeniture succession of the Quraysh, the tribe of Muhammad, and assert that leadership of Islam, the caliphate, should be designated by an imam elected by the community from candidates who possess spiritual and personal qualities. Ibadi leadership is unconditional in an imam, who is regarded as the sole legitimate leader and combines religious and political authority. The imam is elected by a council of prominent laymen or shaykhs. Adherence to Ibadism accounts in part for Oman's historical isolation. Considered a heretical form of Islam by the majority Sunni Muslims, Ibadis were not inclined to integrate with their neighbors. Oman

Tour of Oman Heritage
A legacy that has been passed on from generation to generation; the art, the culture, the folklore and the artistry has to be seen. But there is much more in the heart of Oman to explore: the sense of respect for time, for people, and for nature. Come and taste a part of Oman's rich heritage, kept alive and unchanged for generations. It may help you understand tomorrow a little better. Oman's heritage features a prominent sea-faring tradition, as one would expect from a country with 1,700 Km of coastline. Many museums and galleries around the secluded and historic harbours of Muscat and Muttrah illuminate the importance of the sea and, indeed, of water generally, throughout Oman's 5,000 year-old history. Culture
If you are someone who has an understanding and appreciation of history, arts, architecture and the intricacies of a civil society, Oman is the place for you. From the ancient city of Nizwa to the towns along the coast to the Capital to Salallah, all seeped in history, you can experience Oman's sense of timelessness. The Sultanate enjoys an unspoiled culture and traditional lifestyle in almost every aspect. Even in its modernity, Oman is distinctly Arabic and offers many unique old-world wonders.
