Part 1 - to 1919
The Grange can take some credit for the creation of Ontario Hydro Some of their larger concerns included:
  • The Grange Wholesale Supply Company which dealt in farm implements, household goods and tools. A fire insurance company with headquarters near Owen Sound. A life insurance company and a trust and loan society.
  • Though some of the commercial ventures helped farmers for a time it was these same ventures which eventually led to the degeneration of the Grange. The companies were not controlled by the rank-and-file and sometimes competed with each other and often resorted to dishonest business practices. The salt company eventually joined the salt combine itself and the life insurance company sold out to a firm from Massachusetts. The Grange as a whole became discredited when a few leading Grangers became promoters of the Temperance Colonization Society for attracting settlers to the Northwest. The Society obtained about 200,000 acres of land near the present city of Saskatoon. The Society lost thousands of dollars which had been invested by rank-and-file Grangers though the Grange was never directly involved as an organization. The whole affair caused numerous lawsuits and much bitterness. During the 1890s the Grange was eclipsed by a new, more explicitly political organization

Established in 1980, Northern Ontario Business   provides Canadians and international investors with relevant, current and insightful editorial content and business news information about Ontario’s vibrant and resource-rich North. This article is from the November, 2010 issue. Humility and hard work has kept one Ontario author’s pen to the parchment.  Michael Barnes, a prolific Haliburton-based writer and author of several Canadian bestsellers, describes himself as a middle-rank writer that people don’t remember. Yet he has produced more than 50 books, the majority of them about the history of Northern Ontario. “I’m one of those people that fill up bookshelves in libraries,” he said. His written contribution to preserving the history of Ontario’s North was recognized by the Canadian government when he was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 1994. posted in Canadian mining history Michael Barnes Northern Ontario history 0 Comments October

Ontario City is situated in the San Bernardino County (California) which is in United States. According to 2000 census, recorded population in Ontario was 170,373. The lands of Ontario were earlier used for foraging and hunting by the Tongva Indians. The remains of the Serrano village in the neighboring foothills of modern city of Claremont show that Serrano Indians used the terrain areas of Serrano. The middle school and city park in Serrano bears the name of an explorer Juan Bautista de Anza who passed all the way through Serrano in the time phase of 1774. The well known area of Serrano called as “san Antonio” was named after San Bernardino Asistencia and was a colony of San Gabriel mission. The present day Foothill Blvd was used by Jedediah Smith for the first journey on land in 1826. In 1834 the lands of California were privatized after secularization happened in California. The Chaffey family in the year 1881 bought and got full hold of the land and water rights so as to make a water drainage via which the farmers can water the crops and can prevent periodic floods destroying the Ontario city. The Waffey brothers were the creators of Euclid Avenue. The new “model colony” was earlier named as dry town still it caught attraction of easterners’ and farmers of citrus who were looking for a drier soil conditions. The fountain which is today located at the Ontario Museum of History and Art was earlier located next to the South Pacific railway station so as to gather attention of the visitors and the fountain was meant to show the visitors “abundance” of water in Ontario. The fountain was always started just minutes before the train arrives at the Southern Pacific railway station.

Div., LL.B, CD. 1996; xii; 128pp, soft cover. Since the first days of the settlement of Ontario, inns have played a vital role in the social fabric of the communities that they served. They were landmarks for the early settlers and the patrons of an inn were a mosaic of the lives and occupations within their community. The stories that have come out of this project are an often unrecognized part of Canadian heritage. Volume 1 depicts inns and innkeepers from one of the earliest settled areas of this province. In it, you will note how often inns moved in Hamilton, find out about an early Masonic Lodge in Barton Township, discover where to find historic lodgings in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and which of the wineries in the Niagara Region is nearly 150 years old. That Damned Dam
    14 November 2008
When the Springbank dam broke, many of us were surprized to learn it's primary purpose was NOT flood control, but to provide an adequate waterway in terms of depth and width of water for recreational use.
At present, withe dam not working and the waterway wide open, two conflicting interests have presented themselves, which you can see above in the photographs.
There is very little more Canadian in nature than paddling a canoe. Much of our history was opened by the canoe, and it continues to be a very popular recreation to this very day. As strange as it sounds, even though Ontario is a land of rivers and lake, in southern Ontario, there are not that many places to go canoeing, and those places you can often charge a fee or admission or the like.
Having free and open access to a river for canoeing and other recreational boating is important and draws in tourist dollars.
