Qing Dynasty The Opium Wars Anglo-Chinese Wars , were the climax of trade disputes and diplomatic difficulties between China under the Qing Dynasty and the British Empire after China sought to restrict illegal British opium trafficking. It consisted of the First Opium War from 1839 to 1842 (World Civilizations: The Global Experience FOURTH EDITION AP* EDITION) and the Second Opium War from 1856 to 1860. Opium was smuggled by merchants from British India into China in defiance of Chinese prohibition laws. Open warfare between Britain and China broke out in 1839. Further disputes over the treatment of British merchants in Chinese ports resulted in the Second Opium War. China was defeated in both wars leaving its government having to tolerate the opium trade. Britain forced the Chinese government into signing the Treaty of Nanking and the Treaty of Tianjin, also known as the Unequal Treaties, which included provisions for the opening of additional ports to unrestricted foreign trade, for fixed tariffs; for the recognition of both countries as equal in correspondence; and for the cession of Hong Kong to Britain. The British also gained extraterritorial rights. Several countries followed Britain and sought similar agreements with China. Many Chinese found these agreements humiliating and these sentiments contributed to the Taiping Rebellion (1850–1864), the

When Tea is Soup and Soup is Tea
Introduction to the versatile Chinese pounded tea. Fancy sesame in tea? Many Chinese do. Apart from brewing, the Chinese pound their tea leaves with sesame to make their beloved "lei cha" or "pounded tea".
The origin of lei cha has a few different versions . The gist of these stories centers around a general having to deal with widespread sickness among his army. This general leads his soldiers to a faraway place to fight in a war. However, many soldiers vomit and have diarrhea. As the general contemplates in frustration, an elderly person offers a secret recipe to help him solve the problem. What is the reason for the kindness?
This elderly person was impressed by the general's disciplined troop. The recipe is a quite simple: a grounded concoction of tea leaves, ginger and raw rice. The soldiers cover themselves in blankets after taking the tea to make themselves sweat, some even sneeze a lot. The next day, they are well again.
Mao Zedong is said to have fond memories of lei cha from his early days of revolution when he retreated to a place called Donggu which produces top quality tea. Locals crush tea leaves, sesame, peanuts and salt in corrugated mortar with tea Oil camellia rod as pestle. Then to the paste they pour boiled fresh mountain spring water or snow water collected from the previous year. The hot yellowish white tea was served as a gesture of traditional hospitality to Mao.

The ''" Opium Wars "'' were two wars that were the climax of a long dispute between Britain and China . In the second, France fought alongside the British. This dispute was around the Opium trade which was seen from two different sides. The Chinese Emperor had banned opium in China due to its negative effects on the population; The British, however, saw opium as an ideal good to trade, as it would help to balance the huge trade deficit with China. The Opium Wars and the many treaties signed afterward led in part to the downfall of the Chinese economy, as many countries followed Britain and forced more treaties to increase trade within China.
THE GROWTH OF THE OPIUM TRADE (1650–1773)
The Qing Dynasty of China, beset by increasingly aggressive foreign powers that clamoured for two-way trade with China, entered a long decline in the early 1800s. Europeans bought porcelain, silk, spices and tea from China, but were unable to sell goods in return. Instead, they were forced to trade directly in
