Figure 1.
Opossums measure 2 to 3 feet in length, a third of which is a round, scaly, sparsely haired tail. The head is conical, tapering to a slender, elongated snout tipped by a pink-colored nose. The face is light gray to white, whereas the general color of the fur from neck to rump is grayish white. Because of its body shape, a small opossum is sometimes mistaken for a large rat (Photo by Kim Chandler.) Viewing Opossums Playing "Possum" Preventing Conflicts Opossums in or under Buildings ... Additional Information Prior to European settlement of North America, the Virginia opossum Didelphis virginianus , Fig. 1) was found only in Central America and the southeastern United States. During the 1900s, its range expanded northward and westward. With few natural predators, the absence of hunting, and an abundance of food and shelter, opossums have adapted well to living close to people in urban and suburban environments. Except for higher elevations, opossums now occupy most human-occupied habitats in western Washington.

The opossum has been around for at least 70 million years and is one of Earth's oldest surviving mammals! The opossum is about the size of a large house cat. It has a triangular head and a long pointed nose. It has grayish fur everywhere but on its ears, feet and tail. Its tail is prehensile . A prehensile tail is adapted for grasping and wrapping around things like tree limbs. The opossum can hang from its tail for a short time. Some people think opossums hang from their tails and sleep. They don't. Their tails aren't strong enough to hold them for that long! The opossum has opposable hallux . A hallux is like a thumb. The opossum's "thumbs" are on its rear feet. The hallux helps it grasp branches when it climbs. The opossum doesn't hibernate in the winter. It will often hole up during very cold weather because it runs the risk of getting frostbite on its hairless ears, tail and toes.

Contrary to popular belief, the Opossum is not a large rodent, it is in fact a marsupial closely related to the Kangaroo. These misunderstood and under appreciated animals are a wonderful addition to any ones garden doing virtually no damage. Although these creatures may look ferocious, they are incredibly shy and gentle. They provide a great service through out our neighborhood cleaning up carrion, rodents, rotting fruit and vegetables, snails, slugs, cockroaches and a variety of other unwanted garden pests. They do not dig but prefer to be under cover during the day. They do not attack people and will always run away given the chance. They do not eat fruit still growing on trees (that is done by rats) but prefer the over ripe fruit found on the ground. Opossums have poor vision which often results in them getting hit by cars and attacked by dogs. Nomadic by nature, they are driven by hunger, never staying in one area for long unless there is a constant food supply. Even then , the Opossum may stay for a few nights, but then usually continues on their foraging route, going from one neighborhood to another. They live solitary lives until a female becomes pregnant by a wandering male. He will continue to wander after he has done his duty , playing no part in the rearing of the young. The female gives birth to as many as thirteen kidney bean size babies, that crawl up her stomach and into her pouch. The babies will stay in the pouch until they out grow it at which time they will cling onto their mother as she forages for food. The babies will share whatever their mother finds to eat, but at this age they will drop off and get left behind. Once one the ground, they are on their own.

The Opossum is North American’s only marsupial. They are very adaptable and found in Michigan recently even spreading to the Upper Peninsula. If approached or threatened, the opossum will usually hiss and show its mouthful of teeth. However, if danger persists, opossums will often fall into a state of unconsciousness thus "playing possum." Opossums can be found scavenging and living in attics and under houses. Other complaints include dead opossum on property or roadside and stealing pet food or bird seed. They carry a large amount of parasites which serve as vectors for the diseases they can transmit. They also leave a lot of droppings, which pose the usual excrement health risks, such as leptospirosis or salmonella. Opossum Sound:
    Habitat
Opossums are found in forests, farmlands, grasslands, urban and suburban areas and near water. They are nomadic, staying in one area from six to twelve months. Maintaining a number of nesting sites, opossums nest in hollows of trees or in burrows of other animals, under brush piles, under houses or decks, in garages, sheds, or attics, as long as it is a dark, cool and quiet place where the opossum can sleep during the day. They construct rough nests of leaves and grass. Physical Description
Opossums have a heavy set body that resembles a large house cat. It is easily recognized by its white face and large, rounded ears. The foot-long tail is pinkish and naked and the opossum uses it for grasping and climbing. Adults average 10-14 lbs. They don't live very long, rarely more than two years, three max.

Opossums
by Andrea Johnson Opossums ( Didelphis virginiana ) are the only marsupials native to the United States and the Virginia opossum is the only opossum found in Oregon. Named for the state where the first specimen was described, Virginia opossums are native to the eastern and southern regions of the United States. The first opossums in Oregon arrived as pets around 1910. Some of these pet opossums escaped or were released, establishing permanent populations in Oregon. The opossum has unique characteristics that make it an interesting animal to study and rehabilitate. The Virginia opossum is a cat-sized mammal (25-40 inches long, 8-13 pounds). It has short black and white underfur covered by white, coarse guard hair. The coloring is white around the face and mottled white and black around the body and legs. The ears and part of the tail are mostly hairless and black. The opossum is a good climber, having five toes on each foot including thumbs and big toes which are opposable and allow grasping of branches. Opossums are opportunistic feeders, eating what is available. Foods include insects, slugs, berries and other fruit, frogs, small mammals, carrion, pet food, and scraps from household garbage cans. Oregon's opossums are restricted to the west side of the state where the environment is most suitable.

zSB(3,3) Short tailed opossums are growing in popularity as an exotic pet. They are small, generally friendly creatures which have good pet potential. They are certainly cute enough! Short tailed opossums ( Monodelphis domestica ) are from South America, and are 4-6 inches long (body only; their tail is almost as long as the body) with thick grey-brown fur. The tail is prehensile, meaning it can wrap around and hold onto things, and hairless. They are marsupials, although they do not have a pouch like most marsupials. However, their young are born quite premature and helpless, latch on to a nipple on their mother's abdomen, and stay there until they are further developed, like other marsupials. In the wild they will eat insects, spiders, and rodents. For this reason they are actually welcome house guests in their native countries. They are easily handled if tame from a young age, but should be kept as solitary pets because of their tendency to fight with other opossums. They are nocturnal so will be most active at night, although if they do awake they will be social during the day.

    Opossums - Description
The Virginia Opossums is among the most primitive and generalized of Opossums. This animal is about the size of a cat. Its legs are short, with dexterous toes. The muzzle is long, pointed, with small thin, hairless ears. The Opossum's tail is long, prehensile, and nearly naked. Opossums have 50 teeth and is the highest number found in any mammal.
    Opossums - Pets
In most states it is illegal to keep wild Opossums as pets. Opossums that are in the pet market are the descendants of lab animals and are many generations away from their wild ancestors. Wild caught animals may have the potential to spread diseases, however, Opossums are more resistant to rabies than any other mammal. They eat canned cat food with pleasure and they catch flies, cockroaches, beetles, and mosquitoes. Any diet that includes meat or protein products is dangerous for the omnivorous Opossum because it may cause metabolic bone disease. Opossums are clean animals; they wash their hands and face after every meal like cats. Learning and discrimination tests rank the Opossum above dogs. Opossums as pets have some disadvantages. They don't like to be picked up and they are difficult when attempting to place them in their cage. Their cage should be cleaned very often. They need water available at all times and may die without it. Opossums usually sleep during the day and do most of their running around at night. Cases of cannibalism have been reported in Opossums. Usually it's the cause of poor husbandry, overcrowding, stress, improper diet, and the mixing of different sized Opossums.

    Description
Opossums are cat-sized mammals with a pointed snout, grayish fur, small ears, and a long, scaly tail. It can use its tail to hang from tree branches, and it has paws with opposable "thumbs." Males are usually larger and heavier than females.
    Life History
The opossum is active only at night, and is a solitary animal. They have an eclectic diet and will eat both plants and animals, including rodents, young rabbits, birds, insects, crustaceans, frogs, fruits and berries, and vegetables.
Females usually have two litters a year. The babies are born after just 11-12 days, and are about the size of a honeybee. They are blind, furless, and do not look anything like adult opossums. After they are born, they crawl all by themselves into unaided into its mother's pouch and immediately begin to nurse. Soon after it begins to nurse, the nipple swells and completely fills the baby opossum's mouth, causing it to be firmly attached it to its mother. It remains attached until it is about 7 weeks old, at which time it has grown large enough to detach itself. This unusual adaptation helps make up for the short gestation period. Many opossums die during the first year of their life, and adults usually live only about two years in the wild.
    Habitat
Opossums are primarily woodland creatures, but are also frequently found in prairies, marshes, and farmlands. Although they prefer to live in hollow trees and logs, opossums will also shelter in woodpiles, rock piles, crevices in cliffs, under buildings, in attics, and in abandoned underground burrows dug by other animals.

    Opossum Biology and Habits
The Virginia opossum, Didelphis virginia, is an extremely unique mammal with many distinguishing physical and behavioral attributes. The opossum is the only marsupial (with pouch) located in North America. Distribution is from the east to west coast and their northern range is limited only by severe weather. This animal is quite shy and inoffensive, but will often hiss and bear its teeth when threatened. The opossum has 50 teeth, which is more than any other mammal in North America. One extraordinary display is "playing possum", which is a defensive strategy against a threat or predator (it plays dead). This act is achieved by rolling over, shutting its eyes, opening its mouth, and going limp; the animal may even hang out its tongue and drool. The definite mechanism behind this is still unknown, but it seems to be a temporary paralysis brought on by shock that can last from a few minutes up to several hours. Opossums are opportunistic omnivores. Their diet consists primarily of carrion, insects, amphibians, earthworms, small mammals, vegetables, fruits and berries, while apples and corn are favorites. Rattlesnakes are also a part of their diet, as opossums have an immunity to the deadly snake venom.
