62. Opossum Facts
Fast facts about the only native North Amercian marsupial, the Virginia opossum
http://www.opossum.org/facts.htm
North America's only marsupial (female has a pouch) mammal. The female carries and nurses her young in her marsupium until they are about 2 to 3 months old; then they are carried on her back another 1 to 2 months whenever they are away from the den. Size of a cat; grey to black fur; black eyes; pink nose, feet and tail; black ears; and pointed nose. Solitary and nocturnal: usually slow moving; when frightened and unable to flee may fall into an involuntary shock-like state, "playing 'possum". Hiss or growl and show their 50 sharp teeth when frightened; but, in reality, they are gentle and placid— they prefer to avoid all confrontations and wish to be left alone. Omnivorous: eats insects, snails, rodents, berries, over-ripe fruit, grasses, leaves, and carrion; occasionally will eat snakes, ground eggs, corn or other vegetables. Adaptable; able to live wherever water, food, and shelter exist. At home in trees; uses its prehensile tail to help stabilize position when climbing— it does not, however, hang by its tail. One of the shortest lived mammals for its size, typically 2 to 4 years. Killed by many predators: humans (and cars), dogs, cats, owls, and larger wildlife.

Photos, classification, and basic facts.
http://kaweahoaks.com/html/opossum.htm
Opossum Order: Marsupialia
Family: Didelphidae
Genus: Didelphis
Opossums are North America's only marsupial (pouched mammal). Opossums have opposable thumbs on their rear feet and can also grasp with their tails. Opossums clean up our neighborhoods and help our gardens by eating snails, slugs, insects, snakes, rats, carrion and overripe fruit. Opossums are highly resistant to diseases (including rabies) and snake bites. Opossums in extreme danger may "play 'possum." This coma-like state can last up to four hours, during which time the opossum will become stiff, drool, and have extremely slow, shallow breathing. Most predators will give up the attack, believing the opossum to be dead. An opossum mother may carry as many as thirteen babies in her pouch. Babies are most common between February and June. Opossums are at greatest risk from humans, domesticated pets, and cars. Often, an opossum mother killed by a car will have uninjured babies in her pouch. Opossums that survive until adulthood usually live only 1 to 2 years. back to animals next animal

Description
Opossums are a member of the order Marsupialia, a primitive group of mammals found most commonly in Australia. Kangaroos, koalas and wombats are other wellknown marsupials. The Virginia opossum is among the most primitive and generalized of marsupials. Its closest relative is the Central] American opossum. An adult opossum is 2 to 3 feet long and weighs between 4 and 12 pounds. It has an elongated snout, a pink nose, black eyes and prominent, naked black ears. Its head is usually white and its coarse body fur is mostly grayish white but tends to be darker on its legs. An opossum is well-adapted for climbing. Its feet are plantigrade (shaped so the opossum walks of the sole of its foot with the heel touching the ground) and its toes are dexterous (skillful, like fingers). Its hind feet have a toe that resembles a thumb and makes them look somewhat like human hands. Its naked, scaly tail is able to wrap around and grasp limbs and can support the animal's full weight for short penods. The opossum's skull has 50 teeth, the highest number found in any mammal.

Opossum Creek Falls
(Oconee County) Trail Map Photo
Description:
This two-hour journey is quite an effort for the 50-foot Opossum Creek Falls, but depending on your spirit of adventure, reaching the falls could rank among your most rewarding waterfall excursions, or the most difficult. Most of the two-mile hike ambles along a pleasant, forest service trail shaded by an assortment of hardwoods and bordered at times by small partridgeberry wildflowers. When you reach the Chattooga River, turn left onto a heavily vegetated path and scramble around rocks and trees for a time-consuming half-mile hike to the base of the falls. Height: 50 feet Length of hike: 1.5 miles to the Chattooga River. Another 0.5 mile up Opossum Creek Time to hike: 2 hours Difficulty: Strenuous Creek or river: Opossum Creek USGS Quadrangle: Rainey Mountain Directions to the falls: 1. From Westminster, drive west on US 76 for 13.3 miles and turn left onto Damascus Church Road (Oconee County S-37-96). Long Creek Fire Station will be on your right after this turn.
