Many of past clients call this is a "magical trip". We will take you to meet one of the human's closest living relatives in animal kingdoms: Orangutan (pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus sp.) living free at their natural home at Camp Leakey, Tanjung Harapan and Pondok Tanguy stations inside the misty rain forest surrounded by proboscis monkeys, macaques, gibbons, birds including the giant hornbills and other exotic flora and fauna. You will explore the quit river on a traditional boat ( "African Queen" river boat style) and having some short walk around the stations.

Overview
The Orangutan Health Project (OHP) was the first orangutan research project to investigate special behaviours and ecological conditions necessary to maintain health in wild orangutans. In addition, OHP is the only on-going and long-term orangutan health research project being conducted in the world at this time. This is partly due to the complexity of self-medicating behaviours of the orangutan and the astonishing variety of flora in the rainforest, which also entails geographical and seasonal variations. There is still a great need for more information to be gathered and for further research to be conducted in order for us to continue learning about orangutan health and how orangutans combat disease. Due to the rapid decline of rainforest trees and plants each year, OHP aims to facilitate rainforest preservation by bringing to light the enormity of the importance of Indonesian rainforests through information obtained through our research regarding the healing properties of plants found only in the rainforests. The use or consumption of these plants is not limited to wild orangutans, but also applies to captive orangutans. Perhaps, eventually, some of these same plants can be used in natural and pharmaceutical medicines to treat human ailment. The Orangutan Health Project is led by Ivona Foitova, a Veterinary Doctor from the Czech Republic with an additional PhD in Wildlife Disease.

Pongo pygmaeus The total population of Pongo pygmaeus The most serious threat to orangutan viability is the unsustainable practice of timber extraction in Indonesia and Malaysia. Habitat destruction and the subsequent degradation, either from commercial timber harvesting or conversion of land to agriculture poses a very serious threat to these arboreal apes. Moreover, the illegal pet trade is booming in Southeast Asia and infant orangutans are very popular pets (Sodaro 1997). The low densities, small population size, and increasing pressure on their habitat coupled with certain factors of orangutan behavioral ecology including diet, low reproductive rates, extensive period of development, and the longest interbirth interval of any great ape, make the orangutan extremely vulnerable to extinction in the near future if threats are not minimized (Morrogh-Bernard et al. 2003).

pygmaeus The name Orangutan means "man of the forest" in Malay. The Orangutan is the largest of the tree dwelling apes of Southeast Asia. Orangutans can grow up to five feet tall, but males are usually 4 feet tall and females are 3 feet. They have an arm span of 8 feet when full grown. The adult male orangutan can weigh up to 220 lbs. and an adult female can weigh up to 110 lbs. They are heavily built and their arms arevery long and lanky, but their legs are short and weak. Orangutans have long, thin reddish brown hair. They have a high and sloping forehead and a rounded snout. Males have cheek pads made up of fat which keep on growing as they get older. The big toe on each foot can rotate and touch the ends of the other toes, like our hands. So Orangutans have four "hands". When on the ground, Orangutans walk on all four limbs. Their knees are bent inward and their arms are placed either flat or clenched on the ground. Their calls are whining and squeaking sounds. The adult male makes a long roar- like call. Orangutans are duirnal and feed during the day. At night they build a platform style nest out of branches about 40 to 50 feet above the ground.
