  • Animal Face Off Videos Orangutan, a species of anthropoid (manlike) ape. Orangutans are related to gorillas, chimpanzees, and gibbons. They are found in tropical rain forests of the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. (Their name comes from the Malayan for "man of the woods.") An adult male is about 4 feet (1.4 m) tall when standing erect, and weighs up to 200 pounds (90 kg). The female is smaller and weighs about 90 pounds (40 kg). The orangutan has a sloping forehead; small, rounded ears; a short, stout body; and short legs. It has no tail. It is covered with red or reddish-brown brown shaggy hair. There are bald patches on the forehead and shoulders, and around the mouth. Old males have protruding areas of skin on their cheeks, which make their faces appear broad. The orangutan has long arms, small ears, a stout body, and short legs.

Malayan words "orang utan" mean "forest man"
ORANGUTAN FACTS Name: Orangutan Scientific name: Pongo pygmaeus Range: Found on the Malaysian islands of Borneo and Sumatra in Southeast Asia; although range once extended into northwest India, China, Java, and Sulawesi. Habitat: Live in lowland and hilly tropical rain forest, including dipterocarp and peat-swamp forest. Their habitat is almost wholly arboreal (tree dwelling). Status: Endangered. Threatened by the destruction of its forest environment to make room for farms and villages, and to harvest lumber. Diet in the wild: Orangutans are omnivorous; they eat both plants and animals such as: fruit, leaves, flowers, bark, nuts, shoots, insects, bird eggs, and small mammals. Some may be seen eating soil, a source of minerals for many animals. Water is drunk from tree holes by dipping in a hand and sucking the water-drops that fall from its wrist. Diet in the zoo: Fruits such as apples, oranges, bananas, and kiwi, in addition to vegetables like carrots, yams, and romaine lettuce. Physical description: Second in size only to the gorilla, the orangutan male weighs 130-220 lbs; whereas, the female is about 88-110 lbs. Height, males are 4 to 5 ft and females 3 1/2 ft. Characterized by long, shaggy, reddish-brown hair that can reach 20 inches. Bare face, with round eyes and small ears. Short, weak legs and long, powerful arms, curled fingers and feet, flexible shoulder and hip joints. Size usually determines the orangutan's sex since males are always much bigger. In addition, males develop large fleshy flaps (cheek pads) on faces, and large throat pouches. Males also possess pouches of pebbly skin on chest.

AN ENDANGERED SPECIES The only great ape that lives on the Asian continent, the orangutan is found on the Malaysian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Its name means "man of the forest," and it is one of thousands of species of wildlife that live in tropical Asian forests. The orangutan's story is similar to that of a large number of Asian animals: its forest habitat is being rapidly destroyed by conversion to agriculture, both by large commercial plantations and smaller subsistence farms. At the same time, humans are killing the orang's prey species (birds and small mammals) for food and capturing it for the pet trade. There are an estimated 30,000

Rescued Macaque Monkeys Faring Well
Shiva Lee Tonks Teddy Kera
In mid-July, a group of 25 Java Macaques arrived at Primarily Primates after their release from a New Jersey toxicology lab that went out of business. There were 55 macaque monkeys. All had been used in experiments. Sanctuaries were found for all of them. Twenty-five came to Primarily Primates. The macaques arrived wearing blue restraint collars that made it easier for the vivisectors to control them. The hard plastic collars were removed as soon as they arrived, and Dr. Valerie Kirk, our on-site veterinarian, assessed the monkeys’ health. read full article

At an Oklahoma primate sanctuary called Mindy’s Memory, eight monkeys will be welcomed. All weigh from four to seven pounds. All come from an Oxford, New Jersey animal testing lab that recently closed its doors. General Research Interests
Research specialties include studies of primate behavior, ecology, and evolution, with particular focus on orangutans . Other research interests involve tropical rain forest ecology and phenology.
    Current Research
Since 1971 research has been ongoing at the Orangutan research and conservation center in Tanjung Puting National Park, Indonesia. These studies have been specifically concerned with wild orangutan behavior, the development of orangutan conservation programs, and the re-introduction of captured individuals into the wild. Specific areas that have been investigated include orangutan subsistence, sociality, reproduction, cognitive potentials, communications and tool use. Other primate studies have been carried out on proboscus monkeys and macaques. A small number of SFU undergraduate and graduate students have been involved in field work at Tanjung Puting.
