Military Schools and Alternative Schools for Troubled Teens
Military Schools and Replacement Schools for Troubled Teens The teenage years can sometimes be tough. Sure, you’re going to get an “Oh my gosh, this is so unfair!” every now and then, but that can be handled. Sometimes, though, teens can be at-risk, meaning they could get in trouble with the law, be expelled from school, or a number of other things. If any of these happen, or have a good chance of happening, most parents take action by sending their teen(s) to military school or alternative schools. These alternative schools are ones in which, you the parent, order your child to go to, not the school system doing so. In comparison, military schools are traditionally where parents send their troubled teens in order to turn them into productive members of society. Choosing to send your child to military school, however, does have several disadvantages. For example, sometimes they just aren’t the best choice for trying to get your teen back in line. Admission fees and other expenses are usually collected upfront, and if your child gets expelled from the school, there are no refunds. Fortunately, there is another way to go about helping your teen and the pros of them outweigh the cons of the two types of schools.

Trillium Farm Community Homepage D.E.E.P. Trillium Farm TELAV Trillium Farm Community History The following paragraphs on Trillium history are excerpted from The Trillium Book The original dozen people who gave birth to Trillium in 1976 were well aware that just the act of establishing an intentional community where we could share the Land was an act of social activism. The first years were filled with the awesome tasks of cleaning up the terrible messes (abandoned vehicles and machinery) we inherited, remodeling and building cabins, repairing and building water systems, establishing gardens and planting fruit trees, restoring and operating the trout hatchery, and getting to know each other. Socially, we were "adopting" several of the old local ranchers, working to try and stop construction of the Applegate Dam, and networking with other fledgling intentional communities. Several of the original group helped start Cooperative Forest Workers, where many local people found employment working together restoring the forests. In 1979, we started Trillium School, which operated on the land for five years. Accredited, and publicly funded in its last year, the school peaked at over twenty students, grades K-9, with a staff of seven. The school enriched the community in many ways until funding was cut under the Reagan administration. When the school closed, Trillium donated all the desks, books, and supplies to Horizon School, which we helped establish in the nearby Williams Valley.

I'll be moving to Southern Oregon early this summer with my seven-year old son. I'm looking for "alternative" schools for him. Currently he is enrolled in a Waldorf-inspired, nature-oriented school and I would love to provide him some continuity...or find him a school that appreciates and takes advantage of Oregon's amazing outdoor resources!
I'm aware of the Siskiyou school in Ashland but am afraid that lovely town may be out of my price range. I'm currently focusing on towns in Josephine and Jackson county but I am open to other areas.
