What Is a Student Health Appraisal?
By Rosalyn Goh eHow Contributor updated: April 15, 2010 I want to do this! What's This? Students undergo health appraisals. Fotolia.com Student health is the concern of educational providers because poor health can interfere with educational progress. Good health involves not just physical wellness but also mental, and social well-being of the student. Schools comply with regulations set by Education Law and the Commissioner of Education. Each state has different regulations and guidelines for professionals administering the student health appraisal.
Purpose
  • The student health appraisal serves many purposes. It allows educators to be aware of any possible health issues that might affect the student's ability to participate in programs. Any potential diseases or health concerns can be brought to the attention of the student's family . It also gives health care professionals the opportunity to counsel the student and their family in regards to any concerns they may have.
  • Examination Requirements
  • The required examinations and grades they are required in vary from state to state. The Center for Health and Health Care Centers in Schools offers a listing of many state guidelines for school health services. In Pennsylvania children are required to have medical screenings before entering school for the first time, and in the sixth, and 11th grade. New York state requires children to have physical screenings before entering school for the first time, and in first, third, seventh and 10th grade.
