Treats for Troops
Toledo Students Collect
Treats for Troops U.S. troops in Afghanistant and Iraq will be getting a special treat in the mail soon: candy and hand-written cards from children at Toledo Elementary School. Third-grade teacher Lynn Bishop spearheaded the project, called “Treats for Troops,” when she learned that many military personnel don’t receive any mail or packages, and that some of them are often hungry. Toledo Elementary students and staff have been bringing in candy and making donations toward the cost of postage. There is a contest to guess the total weight of candy collected. To date, the treats fill three large plastic bins, with a fourth bin being started. Bishop relies on a website, www.anysoldier.com, to find address of soldiers and for other advice on how and what to send. This project has been a learning experience for students, as well. Students in kindergarten through the sixth grade have created colorful, hand-drawn cards. The kids have included jokes, stories about their life in Toledo, or simply offered a grateful “thank you.” Here’s a sample of what some of the third-grade students have written...

The projected deficit next year is about $27–38 million — a stunning 19–27% of the district's operating budget. On Wednesday, November 3, Superintendent George Russell presented his sustainable budget preliminary recommendations, including school closure and reconfiguration proposals.
