Teacher Certification in Oregon
The earliest evidence of human habitation in Oregon was discovered in the state's Fort Rock Cave and Paisley Caves. The Lewis and Clark Expedition traveled through Oregon in search of the Northwest Passage. Oregon entered into statehood in 1859, becoming the 33rd state. Oregon is best known for its dense and beautiful forests, as well as Mt. Hood and Crater Lake. Oregon's economy is based upon manufacturing and agriculture. Oregon produces nearly all of the country's domestic hazelnuts. Grass seed is also one of the state's largest crops. The timber industry was historically important to Oregon, but in recent years, over-harvesting and forest fires have deeply impacted this industry.

Alternate Routes to Teaching
General Certification Requirements Each state has unique requirements for teacher licensure or certification. For information about the requirements in your state, be sure to check with your state Department of Education. Even though most states have unique requirements, teachers are typically required to fulfill the following basic requirements:
  • A bachelor's degree, and in some states, a post-baccalaureate or master's degree. For elementary education, either a major or minor in education (for B.A.) or a Masters in Education will be required.
For secondary subjects, a degree in the teaching area. An approved, accredited education program that fulfills student teaching and practicum requirements must be completed.
In addition to the major, proof of a strong liberal arts foundation may be required. Most states require a passing grade on their state test or the PRAXIS exam. Some states require proof that you have taken a variety of college courses in basic subject areas (English, math, science, social studies, and language), particularly for obtaining licensure in elementary education.
  • Alternate Routes to Teaching To recruit more teachers, especially in areas with a shortage of teachers, a number of states have programs that offer nontraditional routes to teaching. Several have special licensing procedures for non-traditional applicants. The requirements for an alternative teaching licenses can differ by state. See the your state's Department of Education website for further information or search for alternate routes to teaching on the

Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: Bend, OR 961 posts, read times Reputation: 371 Teacher licensing/pay in Oregon (Bend) My husband and I are considering a move to Bend. I am a first year elementary teacher in Colorado, with a provisional license. I am boggled over the licensing process in Oregon. I cannot figure out what type of license I need. I have a B.S. degree in Forestry, and went back to get my teacher certification through an intensive post baccalaureate program. I would like to apply for my Oregon license, but don't even know where to begin! I have been to the Oregon Dept. of Edu. website, but there are so many licensing choices, it is confusing. I emailed the department, but the short answer I received was to look at the website. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

In 2005 Oregon had an average teacher's salary of $48,330 making it 15th in the national rankings. It has a relatively low cost of living which should actually place it higher on the scale than 15th place. This information should not come as a surprise to anyone when you look at the many highly educated cities you can find in Oregon. Experts believe Oregon will continue to achieve fame as one of the top states for educational funding for many years in the future. The starting pay for Oregon teachers is only one of the many benefits that draw new teachers to the state. The support and mentoring programs that have become part of the overall teaching program have created an educational system that goes beyond excellence. The educational requirements for both new and old teachers ascertain that every teacher within the Oregon school system is highly qualified and remains up to date on all teaching methods and educational resources. The additional education not only helps the teachers with their careers but helps them prepare to make a difference in their communities as well.
