What is Organic Gardening?
In an age where people are becoming more aware of their degrading environment and looking to be more eco-friendly, organic gardening just may be the answer to their problems. Not only does organic gardening protect the wildlife from harmful chemicals, but it keeps your family and pets safe as well. Organic gardening may even be more sustainable than using harsh chemicals anyhow. You can also view some eco-friendly promotional products here
Just as with any changes that you make, you are probably hesitant to switch because you do not know how, do not have the time, or simply do not know the difference. When you go to your local greenhouse in search of soil, fertilizer, or even compost, you can take the extra time to find out which ones are organic and eco-friendly and which are not. Many people do not use mulch in their flower beds; despite the finish look it presents, mulch can conserve on water, discourage weeds, and add the nutrients your flowers need. Mulch is a great organic substance that will help your budding garden.
Organic gardening is not all about buying the right materials; it is about being eco-conscious. For instance, you do not have to use harsh chemicals on your plants that have an Aphid problem; spray them down with a very diluted soap and water solution and then rinse with clear water, and your problem should be erradicated. Got a weed problem? Shoot them with some concentrated vinegar on a sunny day and you are sure to overcome them.

Organic gardeners attempt to work in harmony with nature to produce healthy crops. One of the keys of organic gardening is to build a healthy soil ecosystem through the incorporation of compost, manure, cover crops, and rock minerals. Composted yard waste is applied to agricultural crops as a nutrient source. Good soil is essential to grow healthy plants that are able to survive pests and diseases. Organic gardeners also rotate crops, monitor insect populations, exclude pests from plants with barriers, select pest resistant crop varieties, and encourage natural predators to manage pest and disease problems. But they may resort to botanical pesticides (made from plants) or to pesticides made from naturally occurring minerals (e.g., sulfur). So organic does not necessarily mean without pesticides. Organic food is defined by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) as food produced without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. As a result of 1988 legislation sought by the Tilth Producers Coop, the state began certifying organic farms. The WSDA's Organic Food Certification Program verifies the claims of organic farmers through on-site inspections, pesticide residue testing, and maintaining audit trails on organic food products.

"Although chemical insecticide use in the United States has grown tenfold in both amount and toxicity since 1945, the share of crop yields lost to insects has nearly doubled during the same period." - David Pimentel, 1991
It's A Bug Eat Bug World!
Danger lurks in a backyard garden. Aphids, cutworms, mealybugs and other pests are preying on your vegetables and flowers. Who's an organic gardener going to turn to for help? Forget nasty, expensive chemicals, enlist the aid of beneficial insects that will battle and help control pest outbreaks and won't even ask for a thank you, let alone a pay check.
Gardeners turn to biological control for help and to reduce or eliminate the need for chemical pesticides. These insects are the natural enemies of garden pests. That's great news for growers because it means there is an effective, non-toxic approach for solving your bug blues. But the benefits don't stop there! Read on...
The Problem with Chemical Pesticides
Secondary Pest Outbreaks
The problem with broad spectrum conventional pesticides is that they not only kill the "bad bugs," they rub out the "good bugs," too. A garden without natural predators means a world of insects gone wild. There's nothing left to keep pest levels in check. In fact, chemicals can mean double trouble because although you wipe out the first wave of pests, the second wave (not the usual pest, but another insect moving into the area) can cause even greater losses than the insects you were trying to get rid of in the first place (see

How much is a heritage, organically grown tomato worth?
Or, how do I save money in the garden? Gaby Hinsliff got me thinking about the costs and benefits of growing your own in this post on her blog Used To be Somebody. She been trying to grow some fruit and veg - lettuce, blueberries and the like - to save money and to show her son "that vegetables don't all come shrinkwrapped in plastic". She concludes that "apart from the salads and herbs, everything would have been cheaper at Waitrose". 1. Compost As Gaby points out in her post, buying bags of compost for growing gets pricey. Most of us don't have room for a huge composting setup, and even if you do, the amount you'll produce in a year won't go very far. Look for special "4 for 3" deals in garden centres, and buy in bulk if you can as it works out a lot cheaper. At season's end you can also recycle compost you've used in containers as a mulch or soil improver. 2. Fertiliser

Organic and Beyond!
We at China Bend Vineyards have come to making wine with the notion that wine is food. Our background as growers and processors of certified organic foods has shown us that the best foods, that is the most nutritious and flavorful foods, are those produced in the most natural and simple ways. Applying these principles at our winery has led us to realize that natural unsulfited wines made from organically grown grapes are perhaps the ultimate expression of health food. All of our wines are vegan. (Vegan wine is made without the use of any animal products.) Fresh grapes are among the most nutritionally complete of fruits, loaded with vitamins, minerals, easily digestible sugars, and endowed with cleansing curative properties. During fermentation the yeasts thoroughly extract and convert these nutrients making them even more available to our digestive system. Winemaking enhances and captures the health giving properties of the grape in an easily storable form.
