The 'Ndragheta or Calabrian Mafia is cashing in on all things David Beckham with a counterfeit merchandising scheme [T]he Italian government's war on the mob is the reason why the racketeers have resorted to less violent but hugely lucrative ventures, including merchandise piracy. In Italy, Beckham and his business team are going to find the operation there isnt run by small-time crooks, the Daily star quoted a senior FBI agent in Los Angeles as saying. The official added: The Mafia has the means and the money to set up elaborate counterfeit rings. And their street sellers had better not sell anything else, including genuine articles, or they will face very swift retribution. The Camorra continues to shoot children to enforce its brutal hold over drug trafficking in the Naples region Five schoolboys are in hospital after being shot at by members of the mafia. The boys, aged 13 to 16, were shot in the arms and legs by masked gunmen, in a suspected punishment attack. The gunmen had lured the boys to a games arcade, where the attack took place. * * * Detectives said that 30 shots were fired by the group of four men who had arrived on motorbikes. Police said that three of the youths were related to the owner of the arcade who has several convictions and the other two were also members of local crime families. * * * "It was like a scene from hell." Local police commander Sergio Di Mauro: "Without doubt this was linked to some act within the Camorra and luckily for the boys they are not dead. It was clearly a warning to them and someone else probably, they have wounds to their arms and legs but they will live."

Organized crime or criminal organizations refer to centralized enterprises established in order to engage in illegal activities, most commonly for the purpose of generating substantial profit for the criminals involved. Some criminal organizations, such as terrorist organizations , are politically motivated Mafias are criminal organizations whose primary motivation is profit. Gangs sometimes become "disciplined" enough to be considered "organized." Organized crime, however defined, is characterized by a few basic qualities including durability over time, diversified interests, hierarchical structure, capital accumulation, reinvestment, access to political protection, and the use of violence to protect interests. Organized crime takes advantage of social conditions or laws, such as Prohibition against alcohol , illegal gambling, prostitution , or drugs, to find a substantial market in which to operate, satisfying those desires of members of society for things deemed unacceptable. Equally, they use the cooperation of law enforcement or the judicial system in turning a blind eye to their activities in exchange for financial or other reward. Organized crime, therefore, succeeds based on the corruption and weaknesses of those who are not considered criminals. Elimination of organized crime can only be accomplished when the society as a whole rejects their activities.

The site was first launched in 1999. The original purpose had been to share with a broader public some of the material collected for a doctoral dissertation on the concept and theory of organized crime in the U.S. The material includes, for example, a collection of organized crime definitions which has been considerably expanded over the years. A number of papers on organized-crime related subjects, including cigarette smuggling, have also consecutively been added and are available for downloading. A more recent addition is the book-review section which features reviews of books on organized crime and related topics.
