Acupuncture has been a major part of primary healthcare in China for the last 5,000 years. It is used extensively for a variety of medical purposes ranging from the prevention and treatment of disease, to relieving pain and anesthetizing patients for surgery. As in many oriental medicine practices, the emphasis of acupuncture is on prevention. In traditional Chinese medicine, the highest form of acupuncture was given to enable you to live a long, healthy life. The earliest written account of acupuncture is found in the Nei Jing (The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine). This document is believed to be from around 200 BC and is one of the oldest comprehensive medical text book. Pien Chueh, a famous physician of the fourth century BC, used stone acupuncture needles, moxibustion and herbs to bring a prince out of a coma. The Chinese still celebrate his birthday every year on April 28th.

How does the system work?
Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a medical system that has been used to diagnose, treat and prevent illness for over 23 centuries. Acupuncture and remedy acute or chronic ailments, relieve pain, enhance recuperative powers, and strengthen the immune system. In an Oriental Medicine assessment, your practitioner will diagnose, or differentiate, your condition with a thorough examination which will include an interpretation through medical history, pulse and tongue diagnosis. Your practitioner may also use the following adjunct techniques within your session; Moxabustion (heat), Gua Sha (scraping), Cupping (suction), Auricular Therapy (ear acupuncture), manipulation of the points. There are many different styles of Acupuncture, including; Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Tibetan.
What is an Acupuncture treatment like?
Extremely fine, hair-thin, flexible needles are placed at specific points on the energetic pathways, known as meridians. When the needles are inserted you may experience a sensation of tingling or warmth. People are surprised to find that treatments are actually quite relaxing. The length and frequency of treatment may vary for each individual and will be determined by Acupuncturist or Doctor of Oriental Medicine. Acupuncture treatments are scheduled according to the nature of your condition. As you improve, fever visits are required. Discuss your treatment plan with your acupuncturist, since each individual is different.

    Oriental Medicine
Oriental Medicine dates back over eight thousand years. It's a complete medicine. Over the millennia, it had to deal with everything from headaches and neck pain, to malaria and plagues. That long ago, Oriental doctors described the endocrine system. They said that the kidneys had a major responsibility in the production of blood. The West didn't understand this until the 1970's We don't know how they knew these things. However, what they said is still very true today. These theories don't change with the latest research, they endure. Oriental Medicine works!
    Acupuncture
The acupuncturist uses very thin, hair like needles which are inserted at specific points on the body. One Western explanation for how acupuncture works is that the needle acts as an irritant and stimulates an immune response. Though this is clearly part of the answer, it is not the entire picture. Many studies have demonstrated that the quality of acupuncture results are point specific. Just eliciting an immune response on random locations may have some benefit, but it does not produce the great results that we see when it is properly administered. The first acupuncture needles used were actually made of stone. Today the needles are made of stainless steel, used once, and disposed of.

Sun Si Miao, one of the fathers of Eastern medicine wrote that "In cases of disease or disorder, the physician should first address the diet and lifestyle. If that fails, then we proceed to the more heroic modalities of acupuncture and herbs." Here at A Center for Oriental Medicine , we use Chinese medicine to bring our patients back into balance; but our greater job is to teach them how to live in balance so they will not need to return.
