  • The ancient Japanese art of folding paper into different shapes, such as those of animals and plants, is known as origami. Many adults enjoy folding paper into their own origami creations, and kids can enjoy this art as well. Help your child to make his own origami craft projects that he can play with or show his friends how to make.
  • Jumping Frog
    Paper Whale
  • Make a cute paper whale that you can play with using a sheet of square paper and a pair of scissors. Lay the sheet of paper in front of you so it is in a diamond shape. Fold the upper-right edge of the diamond down diagonally and the lower-right edge of the diamond up diagonally so that the two edges meet in the middle of the diamond. Fold the left corner of the diamond over so that its point just touches the vertical line created by folding the two edges. Fold the bottom half of the shape up to the top half so that the two halves line up. Fold the point on the right side of the shape up so it now points up to create the tail of your whale. Snip down the crease of the point you folded up just a little ways, so that you can split the tail a little at the end and fold the two halves down in opposite directions.

  • Origami can be an exciting hobby for kids on the move. Every parent is always on the lookout for something to keep their kids busy while waiting for food at a restaurant. Origami is one activity that encourages greater cultural awareness at the same time that it encourages creativity and is travel friendly. Origami can be a quick and easy paper craft offering ample opportunity for growth coupled with ease of transport. With origami, you are only limited by the scope of your imagination and the dexterity of your fingers.
  • Origami for Early Childhood
  • For young kids, stick with simple patterns and straight folds. Children as young as 4 years old can begin to enjoy origami when they have a little guidance from an adult. There are many resources available to help you, both on and offline. With very young children, you will want to look for designs that are made with simple mountain and/or valley folds such as those found in the beginning half of John Montroll's book "Easy Origami." An example of one such easy design is to make a dog's head. Using a square piece of origami paper, fold it in half on the diagonal with the colored side out, making a triangle. Next, fold each corner on the crease down next to the main point to form the ears.

    Money Origami: Folded Origami Heart
This model is a lot of fun to make and to share… great for leaving an unusual tip for great service, making an out-of-the-ordinary cash gift, or simply entertaining people. The example below uses a U.S. $1 bill:   I like to start with George Washington face up. Use as crisp a bill as you can find, as that will make it easier to fold and make nice sharp creases. Position the bill as shown below (A.), and then fold each of the bottom corners up to meet the top edge of the bill (B.). Crease well and unfold. The resulting creases should look like (B2.).   Now we want to fold each side of the bill back in a mountain fold, at the precise point where the “X” creases on either side of the bill intersect. We will make two folds, with the result shown in (D.); the creases are shown in (D1); ignore the red circles until the next step. Note that the blue crease lines are a combination of dashes and dots, representing a mountain fold. The “X” creases are valley folds. Be sure to crease all folds very well.   Note in figure (D.) that the mountain fold creases point up. With your index finger, poke down just the point at the intersection of your creases on each side of the bill, marked with the red circles in (D1.). The result should look like (E.) and the close-up in (F.) below. Turn your bill a quarter turn to the left as in (F.) and, with an index finger on each side, start to bring the points indicated with the green arrows in (F.) in toward each other, as shown in (G.). Continue to bring them together; as you do, the upper portion of the bill will fold down over them — this should happen quite naturally due to the creases you have made. The result should look like (H.). Repeat this fold on the opposite end of the bill; the result is shown in (I.).

The Ultimate Paper Crafts: Origami Crafts
Origami Crafts, wonders out of paper... Origami are paper crafts...made out of, well, paper. Origami is the art of crafting and creating peculiar shapes out of paper.
It has a long tradition dating back to the 1st century China , which is believed to be the birthplace of Origami. The popularity of the art pulled it afar and in Japan, the craft became a huge success. Origami Crafts is very crucial to the Shinto religion and its rituals.
The word 'origami' itself is Japanese. "Ori" means folding and "gami" means paper. Paper production was not very prolific in those days. So only the rich ones could afford the luxury of the paper folding art. With the passage of time, paper ceased to be exorbitant and ordinary people began enjoying this wonderful leisure pursuit. However, the scarcity did well to the Japanese ultimately. They can make unbelievable configurations out of a tiny piece of paper to avoid wastage. The manuals of Origami Crafts were not published until late seventeenth century and the early eighteenth century. Till then the tradition of paper folding was strictly oral. The reason was not merely illiteracy but also that the families had a sense of prestige around the art. So they kept it a secret and thus many incredible specimens were lost in the process. Cranes and frogs were very popular patterns in Origami paper crafts. They were wrapped up with the sentiment of the local people.

Origami, the ancient art of Japanese paper folding, is an inexpensive and completely portable hobby. Through a series of precise folds, a square of paper is transformed into an airplane, a hat, a box, or just about any other object you can imagine. No bulky or expensive equipment is required and most models can be completed within a few minutes. The only item that is absolutely necessary in origami is paper. The size, type, and color of paper used will affect the look of your finished model, so close attention should be paid to the selection of this most important item. In general, you want a piece of paper that can hold a crease well and that will be able to retain the shape into which it has been folded. Facial tissue, for example, will not work well for origami because it lacks the necessary stability. On the other hand, a cardstock weight paper is too bulky to be folded upon itself more than once or twice. Of course, it is imperative that any paper you choose be cut into a perfect square before you begin folding. Origami is a very geometrically precise craft, with the success of each folding sequence, dependent upon the accuracy of the previous folding sequence. There are a few models that begin with rectangular pieces of paper instead, but those are not very common.
