The Orthodox Church , also officially called the Orthodox Catholic Church note 1 and commonly referred to as the Eastern Orthodox Church considers itself to be the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church established by Jesus Christ and his Apostles almost 2,000 years ago. The Church is composed of several self-governing ecclesial bodies, each geographically and nationally distinct but theologically unified. Each self-governing (or autocephalous) body, often but not always encompassing a nation , is shepherded by a synod of bishops whose duty, among other things, is to preserve and teach the Apostolic and patristic traditions and related church practices. As in the Roman Catholic Church Anglican Church Oriental Orthodoxy and some other churches, Orthodox bishops trace their lineage back to the Apostles through the process of

Welcome!
Welcome to the website of St. Katherine Orthodox Mission located in downtown Kirkland, Washington. If you are unfamiliar with Orthodoxy or would like to know more, please see the section titled "About Orthodoxy." A book or collection of text can only go so far, though. To understand Orthodoxy beyond historical facts and theological truths requires one to experience it. As the Apostle Philip said to Nathanael in John 1:46 "...Come and see." Our calendar of services and events is available through the section marked "Calendar". If you have any questions please contact our priest, Fr. John, via the infromation listed to the right. Driving directions and a map of the parish location may be found in the "Directions" section. If you would like to see the liturgical and social life of our parish, please see our "Photo Album". Finally, a collection of links to Orthodox websites is included. These range from web pages of other Orthodox Churches in the Puget Sound area to websites where icons and books can be purchased. St. Katherine Mission was established by parishioners of St. Spiridon Orthodox Cathedral in Seattle living on the east side of Lake Washington. Our current home is right across the street from Kirkland City Hall. We have services on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings every week, as well as on special feast days. All services are in English. Bible study and an Inquirer's class are each held twice a month on alternating weeks. Bible study is open to anyone regardless of affiliation. The Inquirer's course is open to anybody who has an interest in knowing more about the Orthodox Faith. Please see our

Basic information on orthodox Christianity INTRODUCTION. The orthodox Church was founded by our Lord Jesus Christ and is the living manifestation of His presence in the
http://www.kosovo.net/orthodoxy.html
INTRODUCTION
gr. catholicos = universal The Orthodox Church is a family of "autocephalous" (self governing) churches, with the Ecumenical (= universal) Patriarch of Constantinople holding titular or honorary primacy as primus inter pares (the first among equals). The Orthodox Church is not a centralised organization headed by a pontiff. The unity of the Church is rather manifested in common faith and communion in the sacraments and no one but Christ himself is the real head of the Church. The number of autocephalous churches has varied in history. Today there are many: the Church of Constantinople (Istanbul), the Church of Alexandria (Egypt), the Church of Antioch (with headquarters in Damascus, Syria), and the Churches of Jerusalem, Russia, Serbia , Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia, Cyprus, Greece, Poland, Albania and America There are also "autonomous" churches (retaining a token canonical dependence upon a mother see) in Czech and Slovak republic, Sinai, Crete, Finland, Japan, China and Ukraine. In addition there is also a large Orthodox Diaspora scattered all over the world and administratively divided among various jurisdictions (dependencies of the above mentioned autocephalous churches). The first nine autocephalous churches are headed by patriarchs , the others by archbishops or metropolitans. These titles are strictly honorary as all bishops are completely equal in the power granted to them by the Holy Spirit.

His All Holiness Bartholomew Archbishop of Constantinople and New Rome, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople

The Eastern Greek Orthodox Church His All Holiness Bartholomew: Archbishop of Constantinople and New Rome, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Organization and hierarchy of Autocephalous churches in fellowship with the Patriarch of Constantinople. Orthodox Creed Orthodox Catechism Go To Start Orthodox Creed Orthodox Catechism GOD THE FATHER: GOD THE FATHER is the fountainhead of the Holy Trinity. The Scriptures reveal the one God is Three Persons Father, Son, and Holy Spirit eternally sharing the one divine nature. From the Father the Son is begotten before all ages and all time (Psalm 2:7; II Corinthians 11:31). It is from the Father that the Holy Spirit eternally proceeds (John 15:26). God the Father created all things through the Son, in the Holy Spirit (Genesis 1 and 2; John 1:3; Job 33:4), and we are called to worship Him (John 4:23). The Father loves us and sent His Son to give us everlasting life (John 3:16). JESUS CHRIST JESUS CHRIST is the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, eternally born of the Father. He became man, and thus He is at once fully God and fully man. His coming to earth was foretold in the Old Testament by the prophets. Because Jesus Christ is at the heart of Christianity, the Orthodox Church has given more attention to knowing Him than to anything or anyone else. In reciting the Nicene Creed, Orthodox Christians regularly affirm the historic faith concerning Jesus as they say, "I believe... in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages, Light of Light, true God of true God; begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father; by Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end."

The Archdiocese of Italy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church has several communities throughout Italy. The Orthodox Community of Saint Athanasius the Great and Saint Agatha Martyr is an active Orthodox parish, and diocesan see, located at Via Sampolo 444 in Palermo , the capital of the Sicilian Region. Our Patron Saints
The parish is named after two important Orthodox Saints. Saint Athanasius the Great was Archbishop of Alexandria, Egypt in the early fourth century. His defence of the divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ against the Arian heresy and his exposition of the Church's faith in the Holy Trinity - -notwithstanding the fact that most people in the Roman Empire embraced Arianism ("Athanasius against the world" was the saying of his time) resulted in the proclamation of the Nicene Creed by the First Ecumenical Council of Nicea in A.D. 325. Even though he endured persecution and was frequently exiled from his see, his life was one long witness to the Truth. His Feast day is May 2nd. Our other patron is Saint Agatha. She was born in the mid third century in Palermo and while still young moved with her family to Catania. Refusing to marry a high-ranking pagan, she was exposed as a Christian, tortured and martyred for her faith.Though the patron of Catania, she is also one of the patron saints of her native city, Palermo. Her Feast Day is celebrated February 12th.
