The true orthodox way of thought has always been historical, has always included the past, but has never been enslaved by it. . . [for] the strength of the Church is not in the past, present, or future, but in Christ. -Fr. Alexander Schmemann
Introduction.
Christianity has always been unusually sensitive to the past. Its enduring relevance has, in fact, never been in doubt. The basic reason for this pronounced sensitivity is that Christian biblical revelation takes place in a historical context and is, quite simply, a revelation of historical data, of God's activity in history. It is in time (and therefore in history) that man's salvation unfolds-God's chosen way to redeem us. That Christian Scripture takes the form, more often than not, of a richly detailed historical narrative should thus come as no surprise.

General Information One of the three branches of world Christianity and the major Christian church in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, the Orthodox church, also sometimes called the Eastern church, or the Greek Orthodox, or Orthodox Catholic church, claims to have preserved the original and apostolic Christian faith. Figures for its worldwide membership range from 100 to 200 million, depending on the method of accounting.
Structure and Organization
The Orthodox church is a fellowship of administratively independent, or autocephalous (self - governing) local churches, united in faith, sacraments, and canonical discipline, each enjoying the right to elect its own head and its bishops. Traditionally, the ecumenical patriarch of Constantinople (Istanbul) is recognized as the "first among equal" Orthodox bishops. He possesses privileges of chairmanship and initiative but no direct doctrinal or administrative authority. The other heads of autocephalous churches, in order of precedence, are: the patriarch of

    What is OCNet?
OCNet is a network of BBS conferences for Orthodox Christians that was started by Fr George Masters and Frank Crispell in California, USA. It is now linked to the FamilyNet BBS network and distributed around the world using Fido Technology and the Internet. Any BBS that uses Fido-compatible mailers can link to it, and mail packets are available via the Internet using FTP. We would like to see Orthodox parishes, seminaries and monasteries setting up their own BBSs, and linking into this network. If you are a member of an Orthodox parish, or if there is a monastery and seminary nearby, please inform them about this, and encourage them to participate. If you want to start your own BBS, all you need is a computer, a modem and a phone line. Parishes, schools, seminaries etc could easily start a BBS using an office computer, and run the BBS after office hours. Individuals can do the same thing. See How to start your own BBS for more details. FamilyNet is a general BBS network, and has several other echoes (conferences) that may be of interest apart from the Orthodox ones. It uses Zone 8 for mail exchange. Mail is also available via Planet Connect in the USA, and by ftp from

Jump to: navigation search Previous (Russian Formalism) Next (Russian Revolution of 1917) The Trinity-St. Sergius monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery is situated about 90 km to the north-east of Moscow The Russian Church , also known as the Orthodox Christian Church of Russia or The Moscow Patriarchate, constitutes an autocephalous Eastern Orthodox Church under the jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Moscow, which is in communion with the other Eastern Orthodox Churches. Following the capture of the city of Constantinople in 1453 C.E. , the Russian Orthodox Church saw itself as the "Third Rome," the legitimate successor to the Church of Constantinople. The Russian Orthodox Church should not be confused with the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (also known as the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, or ROCOR), based in New York . The Russian Orthodox Church Abroad was formed by Russian communities outside then-Communist Russia who refused to recognize the authority of the Russian Orthodox Church, as they believed it had fallen under the influence of the Bolsheviks . The two churches have reconciled as of May 17, 2007, and the ROCOR is now a self-governing part of the Russian Orthodox Church.
