Bone spurs are shown around an arthritic hip joint Definition: Bone spurs, or osteophytes, are bony projections that form along joints, and are often seen in conditions such as arthritis. Bone spurs are largely responsible for limitations in joint motion and can cause pain. The reason for bone spur formation is the body is trying to increase the surface area of the joint to better distribute weight across a joint surface that has been damaged by arthritis or other conditions. Unfortunately, this is largely wasted effort by our body as the bone spur can become restrictive and painful. Bone spurs themselves are not problematic, but they are a signal of an underlying problem that often needs to be addressed. Bone spurs are often documented to help assess the severity of a condition such as arthritis.

BONE ORTHOPEDICS, BONE- JOINTS DIS 7.10 THREE PHASE BONE SCINTIGRAPHY TO GUIDE METALLIC IMPLANT REMOVAL IN FRACTURED BONES E.Etchebehere , C. Pereira Neto, G. Zuppi, M. Lima, A. Santos, C. Ramos, W. Belangero, E.E. Camargo. Division of Nuclear Medicine and Department of Orthopedics, Campinas State University (UNICAMP), Campinas, Brazil. edwaldo@mn-d.com Purpose : To evaluate the role of three-phase bone scintigraphy (TBS) as a guide to removal of metallic implants in patients with femoral shaft fractures treated with bridging-plate (BP) or interlocking nail since this decision is subjective. Materials and Methods : Thirteen patients, six with IN and seven with BP were studied with TBS. They were imaged on a camera-computer system after an intravenous injection of 740 MBq of [Tc-99m] MDP. A CT scan was performed in 4 patients ( 2 with BP and 2 with IN) who had implant removal, on the average, 42.2 months after the fracture. Results : The 2 patients with IN showed only slightly increased tracer uptake on TBS and formation of a normal bone marrow canal on CT scan. In contrast, the 2 patients with BP showed moderately increased uptake on TBS and anomalous bone marrow formation on CT scan. The slightly increased uptake of the tracer in patients with IN may be related to the fact that this implant does not allow movement of the fractured fragments. In contrast, patients with BP bad more bone remodeling in the fracture site, probably due to movement of the fractured fragments.

    Bone Density Tests
September 24, 2010 in Bones The amount of bone matter available per square centimeter (unit volume) of bones is medically termed as the Bone density. Bone density is also called bone mineral density (BMD). Bone density is an indicator of osteoporosis and risks of fracture. This is not a direct method of examining the risks. Knowing the bone density of an individual can predict the onset of osteoporosis and susceptibility of the bones to fracture based on the bone quality. Measure of BMD –
    • The density is calculated information and not a true physical density of the bone. The bone density is referred as mass per cubic volume. The bone mineral density is measured by densitometry. This procedure is often performed in radiology or nuclear medicine departments. This procedure to measure BMD is non-invasive (non-surgical) and painless. It involves minute involvement of radiation. Measurements are performed mostly over the lumbar spine and upper portion of the hip. In case, both of these options are unavailable, the forearm is scanned. The density is found to be 1500 hg m-3 on an average.

Many procedures are done with an arthroscope, a thin fiber optic scope that the surgeon introduces into the joint area through a small incision. These minimally invasive procedures with small incisions decrease the amount of pain patients experience following surgery, minimize the risk of infection, and frequently allow patients to go home the same day.
If your concerns range from age-related wear and tear to a sports-related injury, you can rest assured that you will be given the very best in orthopedic care at United Hospital District.
