Radius (Bone)
July 13, 2010 in Bones The bone of the forearm which extends from the lateral side of the elbow to the thumb side of the wrist is known as Radius.Radius is a long bone which is prism shaped and is slightly curved longitudinally. The bone of radius articulates with the capitulum of the humerus. Anatomy Of The Radius Bone:
The anatomy of the radius bone include: The Upper End: The head of the bone has a disc shape and is covered with a hyaline cartilage. The bone of radius has a superior concave surface that fixes with the capitulum of the humerus at the joint of the elbow. As the circumference of the head is articular it fits in the radial notch of the ulna and annular ligament forming a superior radio ulnar joint. The neck of the bone is surrounded by the annular ligament which is a narrowed lower margin. As the neck and head are free from the capsular attachment they can rotate freely inside the socket. The Shaft: The shaft has three surfaces and three borders. These include:
  • The anterior border starts from the margin of the radial margin to the styloid process. It is vertical in the lower half and oblique in the upper half of the shaft . The oblique part is termed as anterior oblique line while the lower vertical part is termed as crest line.

A leader in joint replacement with over 1,000 procedures each year and THE leading hospital in Connecticut for bilateral joint replacement The treatment of bones and joints has advanced dramatically, and the Hospital of Saint Raphael has not only kept pace with new advances, it's long been a leader. More patients come to Saint Raphael's than any other hospital in Connecticut to have bilateral joint replacement - replacing either both knees or hips at the same time. We perform more than 1,000 joint replacements each year. Our expert orthopedic surgeons also perform more single joint replacements - including knee and hip surgeries, as well as joint replacements for shoulder, ankle, hand and wrist - than any other hospital in the region. And now, they are doing this amazing work at Saint Raphael's new Bone and Joint Center - part of an $11 million newly constructed wing of the hospital.

    Bone graft
Normal anatomy The spinal vertebrae are separated by cartilage disks. The cartilage disks are filled with a gelatinous substance, which provide cushioning to the spinal column. Indications A herniated disk occurs when the soft, gelatinous center of an intervertebral disk (nucleus pulposus) is forced through a weakened part of the disk. This results in back pain and nerve-root irritation. Procedure, part 1 The hip bones are a good source for bone grafts. They regenerate quickly and do not bear a lot of weight. While you are deep asleep and pain-free (using general anesthesia), an incision is made over the crest of the hip bone. A piece of bone is removed, and the incision is stitched (sutured) closed. Some discomfort is felt in this area. Procedure, part 2

    Bone-marrow transplant - series
    Orthopedics
    Normal anatomy
Bone-marrow is a soft, fatty tissue found inside of bones that produces blood cells (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets). Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body. White blood cells act to ward off infection. Platelets aid in blood-clotting.
    Indications
    Bone-marrow transplants are performed for:
    • deficiencies in red blood cells (aplastic anemia) and white blood cells (leukemia or lymphoma) aggressive cancer treatments (chemotherapy or radiation therapy) inherited (genetic) diseases (such as thalassemia) immune-system disorders (such as congenital neutropenia and severe-combined immunodeficiency syndrome)
    Procedure
While you are awake and pain-free (using local anesthesia), bone marrow is removed from the top of the hip bone (iliac crest). The bone marrow is filtered, treated, and transplanted immediately. Other times it's frozen and stored for later use. The bone marrow is then transfused through a vein (IV line). It naturally transports itself back into the intended bone cavities, where it grows quickly to replace the old bone marrow.
    Aftercare
Bone-marrow transplants prolong the life of patients who might otherwise die. As with all major organ transplants, however, it is difficult to find bone-marrow donors, and the cost of surgery is very high. The donor is usually a sibling with compatible tissue. The more siblings you have, the better the chance of finding the right match. Occasionally, unrelated donors act as a source for bone-marrow transplants. The hospitalization period is three to six weeks. During this time, you are isolated and under strict monitoring because of the increased risk of infection. Attentive follow-up care is required for two to three months after discharge from the hospital. It takes about six months to a year for the immune system to fully recover from this procedure. Relatively normal activities are resumed after consulting with your doctor.

As children continue to be involved in athletics, particularly in their adolescent years, the practice of Sports Medicine plays an important role in pediatric and adolescent orthopaedics. Our sports medicine physician has specific training and experience in the care of the younger athlete including high school football players, soccer players, swimmers, and elite gymnasts. Treatment may include shoulder surgery, knee arthroscopy, and ACL reconstruction. The goal is to repair the injury first, then strengthen through rehabilitation, and finally, return the athlete to his or her respective sport. If you are suffering from severe joint pain, we welcome you to investigate along with us whether or not this particular operation is appropriate for your own situation.

Orthopedics - Bone and Joint Experts
Andrea Avery September 23, 2010 Orthopedics experts treat problems of the joints, bones and muscles. They do this through a combination of drug treatments, lifestyle planning, physical therapy, and surgical recommendations.
As we age, it's inevitable that our bodies may begin to lose some or all of the virility of youth; luckily, the study of orthopedics has allowed us to halt or even reverse some of the negative affects of aging on our bodies. There are many reasons our bodies may begin to weaken with age. A life well lived is often a life filled with injuries, both minor and serious. These injuries gradually add up on our body, leaving their marks on our bones, joints, and muscles. As the stresses of life begin to add up, we may let our health regimen slide.
    As We Age
To get through the years, we may place undue stress on our bodies and ignore proper diet and exercise at times. For many of us, genetic factors may adversely affect how we age, no matter how well we take care of our bodies. A history of arthritis or bone decay, for example, may serve as warning signs for what we may face as we age. While aging is inevitable, the negative effects it may cause need not be inevitable. If you feel that the state of your muscles, joints or bones have begun to affect your ability to live your life, or even if you want to make sure that your bone structure is healthy before problems appear, you should consider consulting with a trained orthopedics expert in your area.
