Otter River State Forest is a popular camping and day-use facility in a beautiful area of north central Massachusetts. Its developed facilities are centered on Beaman Pond and include 85 campsites , a swimming beach, ball field and picnic areas. Yurt camping is also available. Otter River State Forest was the first area acquired by the State Forest Commission in 1915. History
Some of the forest area was cleared in the nineteenth century for small farms. After the state acquired the land, it was reforested with groves of pines which were planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The CCC also built the first campground sites in the area. The vegetation is now a transition zone between three forest types: oak and hickory, northern hardwood, and the pines. The forest is home to numerous wild flowers and shrubs, deer, chipmunks, catbirds, warblers and vireos. The ancestors of otters probably lived on land. Over millions of years, they adapted to life in the water. The two main kinds of otters are river otters and sea otters. They are found on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. The American river otter is found throughout most of North and South America. Sea Otters live along the Pacific coast of North America, the Aleutian Islands off Alaska, and northeastern Asia. Otters are mammals. They are covered with fur and nurse their young with milk. They Breathe oxygen from the air. Otters are related to Skunks, mink, weasels, martens, and badgers. Otters belong to the weasel family - Mustelidae. The scientific name for the American river otter is Lutra Canadensis. The sea otter is Enhydra Lutris.

Lontra Canadensis, which is also called the northern river otter, the Canadian otter (after the place where the first specimen was collected), the land otter, and the fish otter, is the only one to occur in North America. Although referred to as river otters, they also live on seacoasts. What a River Otter Looks Like

The skeleton is so flexible that an otter can form a complete circle, nose to tail, forward, sideways, or backward. The legs are short and powerful, the tail heavy and long, the head broad and flat. Their short, thick fur is brown, darkest on the upper body and paler and grayish on the belly. of 16
