Owl Printout
Owl Read-and-Answer Quiz Owls are nocturnal hunting birds with eyes that face forwards. They are closely related to hawks. Owls sleep during the day and emerge at night to hunt small prey. There are about 162 different species of owls alive today, inhabiting a huge variety of ecological niches, from rainforests to tundra. Anatomy Owls have a large head and large eyes that face forwards (unlike other birds, whose eyes are on the sides of their head). This eye placement gives them binocular vision and very precise depth perception. Also, there are circles of radiating feathers surrounding each eye, giving them a wide-eyed, alert look. Some owls have feathered ear tufts; these are not ears, but are part of the owl's camouflage.

OWL CREATIONS
Set out pine cones or 2-inch pompoms and let your children choose the ones they want to use for owl bodies. Cut feet and triangular beaks out of yellow felt. Invite the children to glue the shapes onto their owl bodies. Then help them attach self-stick reinforcement labels for eyes, using glue, if necessary.
OWL PUPPETS
Have your children paint paper plates brown for owl faces. When the paint has dried, let them glue on yellow paper triangles for beaks and brown paper triangles for "ears" (actually feather tufts). To make eyes, have them glue small black paper circles in the center of flattened paper baking cups. Then show them how to glue the eyes on either side of the owl beaks. To complete the puppets, glue or tape on craft stick handles.
OWL COUNTERS

For each of your children, draw a long horizontal branch on a piece of paper. Choose a number you are working on, such as five, and write the numeral 5 underneath the branch. Invite the children to use washable inkpads and an owl rubber stamp to make prints of five owls perching on the branch on their papers. Or let them make thumbprint owls, adding details with fine point markers. Encourage the children to use their pictures for counting practice.

Owls exploring ways to get backup QB Cook more involved in offense
Michael Paulsen/Chronicle Rice coach David Bailiff said backup quarterback Taylor Cook is "too athletic and too fast to just stand on the sideline with a clipboard."
Taylor Cook could eventually be destined for the same route the Owls took a few years ago with former do-everything star James Casey. Rice coach David Bailiff said during the Owls' bye week that the team continues to look for ways to get Cook, who is currently listed as the No. 2 quarterback behind Nick Fanuzzi, on the field. "He's so athletic," Bailiff said. "He's like James Casey to us. We've got to find a role for him. He's too athletic and too fast to just stand on the sideline with a clipboard. That's how James Casey got his role. He was too athletic to be the backup quarterback." The Owls have been somewhat handcuffed with how they have wanted to use Cook because of the shoulder injury to Taylor McHargue, who began the season as the starting quarterback. With McHargue still out, the Owls can't afford to put Cook on the field and risk injury.
