Many kinds of owls have two tufts of feathers (called ear tufts, though they are not part of the ears) on the top of the head. The number of owls is becoming smaller because the woodlands in which they live are being destroyed. Owls vary widely in size according to the species. The females are slightly larger than the males. Like most birds of prey, owls have hooked beaks and curved talons (claws). The birds are mostly brown or mostly gray and many kinds are barred or speckled. What is an Owl?
Owls are birds of prey raptors talons ) that it uses to catch and eat its food. Check out our Birds of Prey website for more information! Members of the raptor group include hawks, eagles, falcons and owls. Unlike other raptors, owls are mostly nocturnal , hunting at night when the other raptors are sleeping. Because of this, owls and other raptors can share a territory and tend to not compete with each other. An example of this would be a red-tailed hawk and a great horned owl. During the day while the owl snoozes, the red-tailed hawk will be able to find prey that is also active in the daytime. But at night, the owl takes over, hunting nocturnal animals. 155 different kinds of owls live throughout the world. In North America, 19 different kinds of owls can be found. A group of owls is called a parliament.

Rice lifts interim tag on soccer coach Adams
Nicky Adams, who served as interim coach for the final 13 games, was officially named the Rice women's soccer coach on Monday. "The (Rice administration) made it very clear that was definitely not a choice out of convenience and that I definitely had to earn it," said Adams, who celebrated her birthday on Monday. "I was excited to hear that because I definitely put my heart and soul into every day for the past two months." Adams replaces former coach Chris Huston, who was dismissed in mid-September after leading the season for 10 years. Adams previously served eight years as an assistant at Rice. Rice went 5-4-4 under Adams and advanced to the Conference USA tournament, where the Owls lost to SMU in the first round on penalty kicks. "I was so grateful for the trust they had in me to believe in me to take them that far," Adams said of her team. "They played with so much heart and pride for the past two months. It was so unbelievable to be around."

Over 200 species are distributed among approximately 27 genera. Owls are found world-wide, covering nearly all types of terrestrial habitats. Owls hunt a wide variety of prey, ranging from small mammals to birds, lizards, and insects; there are even fish-eating owls in Africa and Asia. Prey is often swallowed whole, and the fur, feathers, and bones are later regurgitated in pellets. Many owl species, especially those that hunt during night hours, are able to fly nearly silently. Several special feather adaptations make this possible. The leading edges of their outer primaries have stiff, comb-like fringes that reduce noise, the trailing edge of their primaries and secondaries have soft fringes that reduced turbulence behind the wings, and their primaries, secondaries, and wing coverts are covered in downy feathers that also reduce noise. Silent flight may be less important in those species that hunt over water or during the day, and many of these species do not have these adaptations.
