The Owls of North Dakota

Introduction
The following pages describe the nine owls of North Dakota and are designed to help you locate and identify these fascinating birds of prey. Four of the nine owls are fairly common nesting species, while the others either nest occasionally or are found during particular seasons. Three of our owls depend primarily on native grasslands and have shown population declines presumably in response to the loss of required food and habitat. Owls have extraordinary sight and hearing capability. Their eyes are large and used to hunt during the night. Ears of the owl are even more remarkable. They are openings in the side of the head surrounded by deep, soft feathers, which the owl can shape to direct sound into the ear. The bird's facial disc, generally outlined by some change in feather pattern or color on the face, is also believed to help direct sound into the ear canal. Owl feathers are very soft in comparison to other birds and aid the owl in approaching prey quietly. They can strike their victims in the air, on the ground or even in trees by using long, sharp talons.

Video of a barn owl. As predators, owls play an important role in controlling mice, rats and rabbits, which might otherwise overrun the earth. In the process, they tend to select the easiest to catchslower, weaker or diseased individualsthus forging a stronger and healthier prey population. The number of prey required to support each owl is so great that there simply cannot be very many owls. For this reason, owls can quite easily be forced toward extinction should their environment deteriorate.
    Help Our Owls
    • Inform the Conservation Department or U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service if you know of someone who has killed or disturbed owls or who has a live or dead owl in possession. Retain large, hollow trees or old buildings when possibleespecially if owls are nesting in them. Protect all nesting sites. Place nesting boxes for barn owls and screech owls.

Posted on November 22, 2008 by Kate Thanks for your well wishes, everyone, which I really have found most cheering. I am starting to feel better (O, the wonder of evil antibiotics) and my OWLS are almost making up for the disappointment of missing Harrogate. Here they come! (note: I do actually have a head. But it looks pretty rotten right now.) I imagine many of you are familiar with The Owl. It is most frequently seen on this baby owl vest and, (thanks to this link from The Lady yesterday), a pair of mittens Forest mural blog tutowlrial ... hooters just about killed me, and Liz has recently been turning out several fantastic owls So I designed a seamless yoke sweater, featuring owls around the yoke, in the round from the bottom up. I wanted it to be very warm, and picked a chunky yarn (Steel Grey Suffolk from the Rowan Sheep Breeds range). But I also wanted it to be shapely rather than boxy, so knitted the yarn at a reasonably tight gauge to fit my exact dimensions with very little ease. I also worked waist shaping at the back rather than the sides, and lowered the front neckline using two Japanese short rows. Ysolda Someone sent me a link to this article Pattern: Owls

Rather than looking up each translation one by one, you can use a service that—on one page—shows how a word translates into many languages. A multi-language translator is available at the Logos Multilingual Translation Portal . Suppose you want to know how the word red translates to other languages. Enter the word red and select English as the source language. Leave the target language and the other fields blank, then click Search . You will see dozens of languages—although I was a little disappointed not to find Tok Pisin amongst them. For each language a translation is shown, together with an audio file in many cases. You can even enter idioms (such as heads or tails ) and other short phrases, although as your sentences get longer the number of matches decreases.

This is a new comer to our forests, arriving from the east coast and now has become one of the most commonly seen owls in our area. They typically find suburban forests to suit them and can even be found in city parks. They are typically very approachable and often perch low on branches and can be easily seen, and do not seem to be disturbed when approached. They sometimes even follow people out of apparent curiosity, often cocking their heads or making a circling motion with their head. They are sometimes active in the day time, and can be heard calling in late afternoon and in the evening anytime of year. They eat a wide variety of prey: insects, frogs, birds, small mammals up to the size of opposums. Nests are usually in tree cavities and eggs are laid in February, with young fledglings typically out by June. The female often stays near the nest and when the male arrives with food he will perch a distance away from the nest and give a soft call which brings the female to collect the food and bring it back to the nest. This owl can make a spooky collection of odd sounds such as gurgles, screams and whistles, some of which sound nothing like an owl.

OWLS
in North Dakota
Story and Photos by Chris Grondahl - biologist with Game and Fish Department Natural Resources Division North Dakota Outdoors February 1995 A dream became reality during the summer of 1994 at the North Dakota Game and Fish Department headquarters office in Bismarck. After months of coordination between state government agencies and private companies, 55 acres west of the office will become a premier outdoor classroom for young people. The property is being developed into an Outdoor Wildlife Learning Site, or "OWLS." The Department adopted the concept from a similar program in Kansas. The purpose of the program is to provide an outdoor learning laboratory close to schools where instructors can teach environmental subjects in a hands-on manner. Such learning opportunities may foster a better understanding and appreciation of wildlife and the environment. While a fishing pond in the OWLS is full and already stocked with trout, it will likely be next fall before the entire project takes shape. What won't be readily apparent among the new grass, trees and pond is the coordination and contributions that made the OWLS. Development of the Game and Fish Department OWLS began after the North Dakota State Penitentiary gave management authority of 55 acres of land to Game and Fish. The land, which has been idle creek bottom and grassland for many years, lies between the penitentiary and Game and Fish headquarters on the eastern edge of Bismarck.

Owls are easily recognized; most everyone in the world knows about owls. They are considered creatures of mystery or doom or good luck, depending on where you are. They are wonderful birds to discover during the day, like this huge Great Gray Owl (left) in Yosemite Nat'l Park. But they are primarily nocturnal birds, hunting in the dark by using exceptional hearing and eyes that gather light much better than our own. This Buffy Fish-Owl (below right) was hunting over the tennis courts at the Danum research station in lowland Borneo, where I caught it in a flash. Since owls are night birds, they are difficult to see although their characteristic songs and calls can often be easily heard. I enjoy owls (and there is nothing so pleasant as going to sleep on a camping trips to a chorus of owls), but admit to not being much of an "owler." I tend to enjoy a drink after the sun sets, and there are other things to do indoors at night Stalking outside in the cold and dark for elusive critters, aiming a flashlight at where one thinks they are and rarely being correct, is not my idea of great fun, but there are field ornithologists who are exceptional at owling (Ben King comes to mind; his judicial use of tape and his insight into where an owl is likely to be sitting in extraordinary). Others are good at imitations and whistles and can "call in" the owls on their own, but I'm not one of them. Perhaps this explains why my percentage of the world's owls seen is much lower than most other families. I much prefer my owls in day roosts, like this
